Committee Membership: Mr. Riddick sent the letter and got responses from most members. It was decided to leave it to the mayor to add new members. Mr. Schmidt noted that anyone can attend the meetings – they need not wait for an appointment. Under our rules any member of the public may speak and participate.

Davis CA – Report by John Riddick

Mr. Riddick gave a detailed report with photos on his recent visit to Davis CA. They have an estimated 17% mode share but declining. He spoke with Roxanne Numarns (sp?) and William Marshall of Davis’ engineering department.  They think the decline is due to rising affluence and spread of town. Davis is currently 64,000 people in 10 square miles, and very flat.  In early 1960 UC Davis banned all vehicle traffic. So if MU moved to this, it would only take two generations. They have a Highway 40 that was rebuilt, and the Old Highway 40 is dedicated to bike/ped traffic. Funding is impact fees on new development. At least 10% of all new development must be greenbelt, even if it doesn’t connect. But in future, emphasis will be on bike lanes over separate paths. Bicycle roundabouts mitigate bike/ped collisions. There is car parking in some bike lanes (i.e. shared use of street width). At certain signalized intersections there is a separate bicycle signal. Trails are well lit at night.

Mr. Riddick suggested that someone else go out and talk with them.

Davis has just commissioned a bicycle/pedestrian commission.
