Toby found security and comfort with Mrs. Lovett, even though he had no idea what was going on in the bakery, until Mrs. Lovett found the love and attention he wasn’t getting from Todd. Although Mrs. Lovett locked Toby away after he revealed his suspicions about Todd, he remained loyal to her to the very end.

Malcolm and Cole were pivotal in their respective emotional processes: Cole needed guidance about his special powers, which terrified him to the point of affecting all other areas of his life, and Malcolm felt he needed to make amends with Vincent (a patient and his killer), which he did with Cole, who also helped him accept that he was a ghost. Malcolm was also the only adult who actually listened to Cole and offered him helpwhile he serves as Malcolm’s only real connection to the physical world.
