Want the naked truth behind the celebrity red carpet prep process? They often start with stripping for tanning.
Just ask Hollywood tan artist Isabelle Alyssa, who’s got stars like Kylie Jenner, Jennifer Lopez and Miley Cyrus glowing with her Dolce Glow product line, which the latter star recently invested in.
“I think it takes a certain person and a certain personality for someone to say, ‘Hey, nice to meet you, now take off your clothes,'” Alyssa tells Page Six Style.
“You know you have to make them feel comfortable … I just want all my clients to just feel beautiful and empowered after their tan.”
And while “customizing and creating” a tan means asking about the star’s vision, the process also involves keeping the “outside world” out of the sessions—just like Alyssa did before Kim Kardashian’s now-infamous Met Gala Marilyn moment.
The artist recalls that Kardashian requested a “subtle sheen” to go with the archival museum piece, presumably so as not to tarnish the precious style.
“And here’s what, you know, I delivered,” says Alyssa.
This was far from her first time tanning the Skims founder; since meeting Kardashian through co-star Kylie Jenner, Alyssa has dressed her up for everything from swimsuit shoots to an equally memorable outing at the Met Gala in 2021 — where, yes, a meme-generating tan masked “underneath” peeked out species.
Wondering how to get that same red carpet-ready glow (without the mask)? Dolce Self-Tanning Mist ($53), which features a special spray that lets you turn the can upside down or sideways—meaning, according to Alyssa, “if you can use an SPF product, you can use a self-tanner. “

“It dries instantly and is really hydrating,” she says. “You can wash off in just two to six hours depending on how dark you want the tan.”
She uses the spray during her 20- to 30-minute sessions with stars, where she brings a spray tan tent into their homes “so it doesn’t get all over the place” and sometimes contours with a make-up gun “so there’s just really a defined area on their stomach’ or on their cheekbones and jawline.
Before appointments or at-home tanning, the expert recommends making sure skin is moisturized—she likes Kiehl’s ($34) or CeraVe ($13, originally $19) moisturizers—and prepped 24 hours before tanning with an exfoliating mitt ($9).
“Ninety percent of a spray tan really depends on the client’s skin care routine,” she says.

Although now a seasoned expert working with many of the biggest names in Hollywood, Alyssa achieved her stardom balancing motherhood, spray tans “until 1 or 2 in the morning” and a full-time job at an insurance agency.
Soon after tanning Jennifer Lopez for her 2020 Super Bowl halftime performance, she moved into tanning full-time, eventually landing Cyrus as an investor.
“You don’t find that much,” says Alyssa. “But she really loved the product so much, she loved me, she loved this story.”
Fellow former Disney star Selena Gomez is also a fan of the brand after going bare-faced except for Dolce Glow Mist in a recent selfie that garnered millions of likes in just minutes.
“Selena is one of the sweetest, genuine, authentic people I’ve ever met,” says Alyssa. “[We] it just connected straight away and that’s how I started tanning a few years ago.”
But while Alyssa has garnered glowing reviews for her glamour, she says she remains “the ultimate secret keeper” when it comes to what goes on behind the scenes.

“I’ve seen it all. I’ve been through it all…obviously, spray tanning is a very intimate moment, but there’s never a dull moment,” she says, adding, “Let’s just say there’s a lot of fun and secrets that go into tanning day in and day out. My lips are sealed.
