A must-have celebrity accessory during fashion month

Fashion month just ended, during which many celebrities and front-row designers wore sunglasses before, during and after the show. They see glasses as more than just an accessory, but also as part of their outfit or as a reflection of their own personality.

Ariana Mereu, professor of strategic foresight and trend forecasting at the Polimoda fashion institute based in Florence, said luxury brands are positioning sunglasses as a cool designer buy, shifting the trend from before when “young fashionistas tended to buy ‘selfie-worthy’ ‘ and ‘entry-level’ sunglasses from so-called ‘social brands’.

Interest in the iconic glasses is also fueled by the popularity of the ’90s and Y2K aesthetic associated with sunglasses-wearing music stars such as Madonna, the Spice Girls and Justin Timberlake, Mereau noted.

She concluded by stating that “with the ubiquity of social media and selfies, our face is the center of attention and anything that adorns the face is once again of immense importance: statement sunglasses are a great medium for authentic and creative self-expression, another an extremely important trend nowadays. ”

WWD asked designers and showgoers about their choice to wear shades and how the sunglasses make them feel. Here’s what they said:

Pierpaolo Piccioli, Creative Director of Valentino

Piccioli wears sunglasses for the same reason he wears black. “It helps me distance myself from what I’m doing,” said the designer, who took his runway bow in his signature black hues. They help him feel “a little more secure.”

Victoria Beckham said she wears sunglasses ‘because there’s a lot of paparazzi, it’s like your armour. I don’t wear them inside, but I wear them every day. I’ve always loved sunglasses, I’ve had them in my collection since the beginning and I love how, if they’re the right shape, they can complete even the simplest of outfits. It’s the last thing I put on before I leave the house. I have so many! I stock a lot, so I have the best job in the world.”

“I’ve never worn sunglasses to a fashion show before, but when I saw the Ferrari-style outfit I chose to wear for the show, I thought it looked quite stylish and would look even better with sunglasses. The sunglasses I wore the day I showed up in a Ferrari completed my outfit. The iconic Ferrari horse logo in the middle of the sunglasses and their unique shape made them look very interesting. It was the perfect Ferrari look and everything made me look amazing.”

Lisa Rinna, actress

“I think sunglasses bring life and complement any outfit and can change your look, your mood, your whole vibe. I probably have more sunglasses than I have everything. Let’s say probably 250 pairs. My favorite pair are Gucci aviators with yellow lenses, super classic, like vintage.”

Giambattista Valli, Creative Director of Giambattista Valli

Giambattista Valli confirmed that she wears them “because I prefer them to makeup.” They make him feel “fresh after a long night working on the collection. I’m Roman, there’s a lot of sun in Rome, so we really wear them 24 hours a day. It’s a little dolce vita. Even at parties it’s great, just me wearing sunglasses and everyone looking at me. But it’s a statement whether you’re a sunglasses person or not.” His favorites are “Persol. I have 10 of these and a different one for a tuxedo. I change the color of the lens. And I think it works really well with jewelry.

Winston Duke, actor

“I wear sunglasses because I always feel complete with a pair of sunglasses. I think it always completes the look and is a great accent when done with the right frames, material and shape of sunglasses… If my outfit is a sentence, sunglasses are the point. Period! They always make me feel a little more protected. I am very energetically and emotionally sensitive…so when there are lots of flashing lights, constant people around you and the general expectation that you give off energy when you are social…sunglasses almost feel like a protective shield that helps me guard and distribute my energy rations power… So while they are aesthetically useful, I also find them very functional and practically useful”

Ami and Aya Suzuki, influencers

“For us, sunglasses are a huge part of fashion. Thus, whenever we style, sunglasses highlight our fashion, accentuate our looks and even complete our style, playing an important role in completing our outfits.”

Amber Valletta, model

“I like to wear glasses sometimes to shows for several reasons. Sometimes it just makes the look complete. Sometimes it’s a way to hide, especially when you have clothes that might be more revealing. Less intimate. They definitely give me a sense of distance from others as the eyes are mirrors of the soul. It’s a bit of self-defense in some ways. But as soon as I start talking to someone I know, I usually delete it.
