A Tesla Model 3 bursts into flames from the inside as it drives down the road

A Tesla picked up their car from a garage and shortly after hitting the road, they got a lot more than they bargained for. About ten minutes after leaving the store, the owner of the electric car, Mr. Ali Hassan, who is from Texas, reported that his Model 3 started smoking. Shortly after, the car was reduced to a burnt out casing lying on the side of the road.

This little Model 3 has had quite an eventful life. In 2021, he was involved in a crash that left the front end with serious damage. According to the owner’s posts, the car lost its rear bumper, wheel covers, and suffered bottom damage in deep water in August 2022. Unfortunately, the fire seems to have finally put the nail in the coffin for this particular Tesla. However, this was a complete surprise to its owner.

We contacted Mr. Hassan who told Carscoops, “To my eyes, everything looked good. While driving down the highway I noticed smoke coming from the right passenger seat and it got worse as I drove it half a mile to get it off the highway.’

As for the root cause of the fire, it is yet to be determined. Mr. Hassan does not blame the bodywork, but he does acknowledge the connection. “As far as I know so far, nothing other than they changed the sensors, the bumper and the hood under the car,” he said. He further clarified his point in another comment on a Facebook thread.

“There were also sensors that they replaced, which now that I can see they go on the passenger side, and there was a cover that goes under the trunk that they also replaced. I’m not pointing fingers at anything, I’m just saying a theory because that’s my only explanation. Some suspect a battery issue, but Hassan says that has now been ruled out as a possible cause.

This seems reasonable given that most electric vehicle battery fires result in a large pile of ash. What Mr. Hassan ended up with was basically a burnt interior and a largely untouched shell of a car. Mr Hassan escaped without burns, although he is reported to be in hospital with breathing problems. We will be in touch with the owner and let you know when we know more.

We’ve also reached out to Tesla for comment and will keep you posted on any developments.
