AM Batteries (AMB) and Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) to jointly develop technology for the production of solvent-free electrodes for lithium-ion batteries.

AM Batteries (AMB), a pioneer in lithium-ion dry electrode technology, and Amperex Technology Limited (ATL), a leading global innovator in lithium-ion battery manufacturing, have announced that they have teamed up to develop electrode manufacturing technology solvent-free for the production of lithium-ion cells.

The joint venture seeks to address some of the most critical challenges facing the lithium-ion battery manufacturing industry: the large carbon footprint, energy consumption and high infrastructure cost resulting from the current standard solvent evaporation process , used for the production of electrodes.

Leveraging key dry electrode manufacturing expertise developed by AMB and the world-class battery manufacturing team at ATL, the two groups will work together to transform the industry as a whole – both in terms of cost and environmental impact environment.

To sustainably manufacture key battery electrode components, AMB has developed a unique electrostatic sputtering deposition technique whereby dry cathode and anode electrode materials are electrostatically charged and deposited onto metal foil current collectors, which are then processed to their final condition without the use of toxic solvents. This is a technological innovation of the platform that enables a significant reduction in operating costs from energy savings, a reduction in the cost of major electrode coating equipment and a reduction in physical infrastructure requirements. Battery manufacturers can also benefit from significant CO2 reductions2 emissions if they make batteries using AMB’s dry electrode process. With the additional customizability afforded by the dry process, AMB’s technology also offers a path to other benefits, such as faster charging, higher energy density, and safer batteries with current and future battery chemistries. The AMB process can be further developed to integrate into full-scale manufacturing applications in collaboration with ATL’s subject matter experts.

Yan Wang, With CEO, said:

We are honored to work together with ATL as both of our companies have goals of living and being part of a sustainable planet.

“Demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to grow worldwide. One of the main issues for battery manufacturers is perfecting manufacturing techniques to remove the solvents used in the “wet coating” of the electrodes. Our dry electrode manufacturing technology enables the coating of lithium-ion battery electrodes without the need for any solvents or energy-intensive evaporation.”

ATL is known worldwide for its high-tech prowess in the development, manufacture and packaging of high-quality rechargeable lithium-ion battery cells and packs. Its services, know-how, manufacturing capacity and system integration capabilities are category-leading.

Additionally, ATL’s specialization in high-energy-density, high-power, and fast-charging batteries for applications ranging from smartphones and laptops to drones, robots, and wearables makes them an ideal partner for developing high-value battery innovations.

Jo Kit Choo Lamexecutive vice president of ATL, said:

We see a need for improvements in battery manufacturing in terms of cost, scale and environmental impact issues.

“We did our due diligence in looking for an innovative company that had a viable solution to these problems. AMB’s electrostatic spray technology directly addresses these challenges and provides solutions for a long-term path to a healthier and greener planet.”
