Artist Chiharu Shiota paints Chateau Mouton Rothschild’s 2021 label.

Acclaimed Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota has shared his unique vision with the Château Mouton Rothschild label for 2021, creating a captivating work of art titled “The Universe of Mouton”. In this piece, Shiota masterfully captures the delicate relationship between humanity and nature, highlighting the winery’s commitment to embracing the natural conditions that influence grape growth.

Shiota’s drawing depicts the slender silhouette of a human figure against the backdrop of beautiful nature, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the environment. The figure, though seemingly small, plays a key role in maintaining this delicate balance. Shiota poetically describes this balance, stating, “Mouton holds the balance between man and nature.”

The four threads in the work symbolize the four seasons, anchoring time in the space of the composition. Each season brings its own unique emotions – the loneliness and sadness of winter, the planting of hope in spring, the richness of summer and the fulfillment of autumn. Shiota expresses, “It’s like keeping the memory of the year in the wine,” emphasizing the deep connection between the artwork, the wine, and the memories encapsulated within.

Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, co-owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, resonated with Shiota’s vision, describing the label as the embodiment of “metaphorical realism.” He imagines the work as a vine grower firmly grasping a fairy grape, emphasizing the fragility and fertility inherent in the relationship between humanity and nature.

Chiharu Shiota, born in Osaka in 1972 and currently based in Berlin, is known for turning personal experiences and emotions into universal human concerns. Her artistic repertoire includes installations, sculptures, drawings, videos, photographs and canvases. Notably, she received the Minister of Education’s Art Promotion Award for New Artists in Japan in 2008.

Since 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild has commissioned original artwork for the label of each vintage, creating the world’s most unique collection of contemporary art and wine (read more about it here). Artists such as Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Jeff Koons and even Prince Charles (now King Charles III) and many others have contributed.

To celebrate the unveiling of the Château Mouton Rothschild 2021 label, an exclusive lot is being auctioned by Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA in association with Christie’s. The lot, featuring various formats from the 2021 vintage, will benefit the Association Antoine Alléno, a charity founded by Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno. Funds raised will go to families affected by violence, providing comprehensive support programs.

As Château Mouton Rothschild continues its legacy of blending fine wine with contemporary art, Chiharu Shiota’s Mouton Universe stands as a fine example of the enduring harmony between nature, humanity and the art of winemaking.
