Greensburg, PA – The Le Moyne College baseball team dropped the final two games of its non-conference series at Seton Hill University on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins went 5-0 during the first game, then scored a run in the bottom of the seventh during the second game to earn a 5-4 victory.
Seton Hill senior left-handed pitcher Kevin Waupel allowed just two hits, zero runs and two walks with 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings to earn the complete game shutout win in the first.
Redshirt-sophomore right-hander Jordan Goldman (Encinitas, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy/Palomar College/Grossmont College) started game one on the mound for the ‘Phins and went 5.2 innings of work before ending the shutout John Geer (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) got the final out in the sixth inning.
Graduated second base Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, NY/Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) provided both of Le Moyne’s hits during the one-hitter.
Jack Whalen had two hits and a team-high two RBIs for Seton Hill during the first game.
Goldman didn’t allow a run through the first four innings, then the Griffins scored two in the bottom of the fifth, then three more in the seventh.
Le Moyne put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the sixth, but Vaupel got a ground ball to end the inning and keep the shutout bid alive.
Vaupel recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to end the game.
During the second game, Seton Hill senior right-hander Jack Oberdorf launched a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
The Griffins put runners on first and second with two outs in the second inning, but Le Moyne started the pitcher Guess Smith (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) struck out the next batter he swung to end the inning.
Freshman right-hander Eric Svenichki (Lancaster, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) entered the game for Smith with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, and the Griffins were able to scratch out three more runs to extend their lead to 4-0.
Swiencicki walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the third, but retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Le Moyne Sr. relief pitcher Jed Boyle (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) held the Griffins scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings, then Le Moyne rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh.
Graduated first base Dewey Roden (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) led off the seventh frame with a single to right field, then the freshman Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) doubled to right field to put runners on second and third with zero outs.
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, NY/Geneva) drew a walk in the next at-bat to load the bases, then Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) was hit by a pitch to drive Rodin from third.
Seton Hill then made a pitching change Lucas Eggenhauser (Suffern, NY/Suffern) drew a walk to drive in Keneston and cut Le Moyne’s deficit to 4-2.
Freshman Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) ripped a two-RBI single up the middle during the next at-bat to tie the game at 4-4.
Seton Hill got a ground ball and a double play to end the inning and prevent further damage.
SHU catcher Vincenzo Rauso had two outs in the bottom of the seventh, then stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch to end the game and give the Griffins a 5-4 victory.
The Le Moyne College baseball team will return to action on Saturday, March 25 when they travel to Saint Anselm College for a four game non-conference weekend series against the Hawks.
