Coachella 2023 and Celebrity Interpretations of Fashion Trends | Art and culture

The hot deserts of Indio, California are home to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, an annual festival celebrating music and the arts. Coachella has become a pop culture staple in recent years, where celebrities and influencers showcase not only their talents, but also their fashion.

Celebrities and influencers usually wear extravagant outfits rooted in popular street trends. This year was no different, featuring elements such as knits, denim on denim, patchwork, puffer jackets, fur and patterned jeans. Many celebrities came to impress with their interpretations and exaltation of the latest fashion trends.

Knitting

Daus Mendoza is an influencer who has recently gained attention on TikTok and Instagram — especially TikTok with 2.5 million followers — for her makeup and fashion skills. Mendoza took Coachella by storm this year, wearing a head-to-toe red knitted face mask with devil horns, crop top and pants on day one.

Knits have quickly become a hot trend, most notably through the knitted hat with ears that was a trend last fall. Knitwear is usually combined with other fabrics, but Mendoza wore an all-knit outfit. While impressive, this wasn’t the last trend we’d see brought up at this year’s Coachella festival.

Denim on denim

Denim-on-denim is a streetwear staple that has been most associated with pop culture fashion since the early 2000s. This trend died down until recently with the return of Y2K styles. Denim on denim is usually blue denim jackets worn with denim pants, but some Coachella attendees reinterpreted the classic style.

Kirsten Titus, an 8.7 million-follower TikTok influencer known for her storytelling videos, wore a denim skirt and knee-high boots with a denim bag. She teamed the look with a simple white top and butterfly hair decorations, giving the style a more feminine edge.

Many other celebrities were involved in wearing denim on denim, but the most notable was Callie Uchis. She is an American singer and songwriter, best known for her song “Telepatia”, which peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Uchis wore a gorgeous head-to-toe denim look consisting of a corset top, pleated skirt, knee high boots and butterfly decorations that appeared throughout the outfit. Uchis performed at this year’s Coachella festival with artists such as Tyler, the Creator and Omar Apollo.

Puffer x Patchwork

Bad Bunny is a Puerto Rican rapper who broke into the world in 2022 with his album “Un Verano Sin Ti”, which was the most popular album of the year, according to Luminate. Bad Bunny also performed at this year’s Coachella festival, but what caught the attention of the crowd were his outfits.

His outfit from day one was a mix of many pop culture styles, realized in a multi-colored, patchwork puffer jacket with matching pants. Bad Bunny wore this outfit during his first performance, performing songs such as “Me Porto Bonito” and “Moscow Mule”.

Jeans with leather and paint

Amber Marks is an American singer and songwriter who attended Coachella but did not perform. Mark released his debut album ‘Three Dimensions Deep’ in January 2022 and has since been performing in the United States.

Mark was spotted at Coachella wearing a neon green leather jacket with a pink strappy top and painted jeans that matched the top half of her outfit. The leather coat was a particular choice as these coats are mostly seen during the fall and winter seasons. Regardless, Mark took the look down and tied it together, revealing glittery make-up that flowed down her back and arms beneath her fur coat.

Year after year, Coachella is inspired by streetwear. Celebrities and influencers are taking the elements and exaggerating them, creating a fashion gray area between the red carpet and everyday fashion. Overall, Coachella allows people to dress more extravagantly and inspires better fashion in everyday life.
