First Lady Jill Biden made a stop at Beta Technologies in South Burlington on Wednesday morning. Vermont is her fourth stop on a short tour in support of the president’s Investing in America program, following Maine, Michigan and Colorado. Biden was joined by Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, Governor Phil Scott, Senator Peter Welch, Jane Sanders, Congresswoman Becca Balint and Mayor Miro Weinberger. They got an up-close look at Beta’s electronic aircraft while talking to current interns about their hands-on experience at the growing company. They also spent time with students and faculty from the North Side Career Center, highlighting their work working on electric cars. Vermont’s investments in green technology while promoting STEM and career and technical education, as well as the state’s free community college program, were applauded by Biden, Cardona and state leaders who want to see more of these programs implemented across the country .” With more than $800 million in federal investment and 21,000 new jobs since President Biden took office, Vermont is rebuilding a stronger economy and an even stronger, more resilient workforce,” said Congressman Balint. “Governor, what you’re doing here in Vermont is raising the bar for economic development and career paths. (It’s) really creating a map of what other states should look at and say, ‘This is how you do it well,’” Cardona said. “Today is a reminder that we can and must prioritize progress over politics, especially on issues on which the majority of Americans agree,” said Governor Scott. These are not red or blue ideas. These are American ideas,” Biden said. The program is slated to provide $800 million to Vermont for new projects, including 47 new infrastructure projects. The program outlines plans to expand the U.S.-Canada border at Highgate Springs, help repair the Winooski Move and add a new terminal at Burlington International Airport. In Beta, the first lady learned more about the company’s progress in making electric airplanes and its investments in STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — and career technical education programs. on America’s Agenda emphasizes the need for clean energy.
