FSU Basketball vs. USF: How to Watch, Notes, Game Topic

Florida State Seminoles basketball, looking to snap a two-game losing streak, is set to take on the South Florida Bulls today in the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise.

FSU is 2-0 so far this season on neutral courts after defeating UNLV and Colorado to win the Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach earlier this season.

Florida State is 4-3 on the season after blowing double-digit second-half leads in back-to-back games — first against the Georgia Bulldogs at home and then against the North Carolina Tar Heels on the road.

USF (2-4) has struggled so far this season, especially on offense, where they have the 302nd-ranked offense in the country. The Bulls’ only wins this season came against South Carolina State (96-52) and Northern Iowa (75-65) and are currently led in scoring by senior guard Selton Miguel, who is averaging 12.7 points per game.

According to DraftKings, Florida State is a seven-point favorite over the Bulls, with an over/under of 147.

Florida State, which has won both of its games played this season on a neutral court, travels to Sunrise, Florida to take on the USF Bulls in the AutoNation Orange Bowl Classic. This is the 13th time in Classic history and the 12th time under head coach Leonard Hamilton that the Seminoles will play in the event. It also marks the third time Florida State will face USF in the Orange Bowl Classic, with the Seminoles winning the first two meetings in 2014 (75-62) and in 2019 (66-60). With nine wins in their game history, the Seminoles have beaten eight different teams, with the most recent win coming against USF in 2019. The Classic was not played in 2020 or 2021. After Saturday’s game against USF, the Seminoles will break through for the fall semester exam period and will host SMU on Saturday, December 16 at 8:00 pm in the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Florida State plays USF in the AutoNation Orange Bowl Classic on Dec. 9, 2023 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise. Florida State leads the all-time series against USF by a margin of 22-12 with three wins in the last four games played between the two teams. The series between the Seminoles and the Bulls began in 1973 with Florida State winning 93-53 in a game played in Tallahassee. The teams have met seven times at a neutral site, with the Seminoles holding a 4-3 advantage in games played off campus. Amir Abdur-Rahim is in his first season as the head coach of the Bulls. He was previously the head coach at Kennesaw State – the Seminoles’ first opponent in the 2023-24 season. Abdur-Rahim has never faced Florida State as a coach (head or assistant), but was on the staff at Georgia Tech as director of player development during the 2011-12 season. The Seminoles went 2-0 against the Yellow Jackets (and won the ACC Tournament championship) that season. Desmond Oliver, an assistant coach on Abdur-Rahim’s staff, is 0-3 all-time against Florida State as he recently coached against Florida State as a member of Rick Barnes’ Tennessee staff in the first round of the Emerald Coast Classic in 2019 – a 60-57 Florida State win. He also coached against Florida State as an assistant in Charlotte in two games won by the Seminoles in 2012-13 (79-76 at Charlotte) and in 2013-14 (106-62 at Florida State). Assistant coach Ben Fletcher was an assistant coach at Troy when the Seminoles defeated the Trojans 83-67 on Dec. 3, 2018, in Tallahassee and are 0-1 all-time against Florida State. Griffin McHone, the Bulls’ director of player development, is the son of Florida State legend Moe McHone, who was an assistant coach (1970-78) with the Seminoles when they played UCLA for the 1972 national championship. Moe McHone is from 1965 graduate of Florida State University. Lee Butler, senior associate athletics director for student-athlete success, was an ACC assistant commissioner from 2010-22 and knows Florida State and Seminole head coach Leonard Hamilton well in an administrative role. Butler was a member of Miami’s basketball team during the 2004-05 season and went 2-0 as a player for the Hurricanes against the Seminoles that season. Michael Kelly, the director of athletics at USF, and Chris Pierce, the Bulls’ associate director of athletics, worked in the ACC and closely with Hamilton and his staff at Florida State.

As is its annual tradition at the Orange Bowl Classic, Florida State will wear its signature turquoise Nike N7 uniforms in its game against USF. This is the 26th time the Seminoles will wear the uniforms since they first wore them on Nov. 17, 2013 in an 89-61 win over UT Martin. This is the 20th time the Seminoles have worn the special uniforms during non-conference play – the Seminoles are 15-4 against non-ACC teams in the uniforms. This is the ninth time the Seminoles have worn the uniforms in the Orange Bowl Classic – Florida State is 6-2 in the special uniforms while playing in the Orange Bowl Classic.

Florida State owns a 9-3 record in 12 previous Orange Bowl Classic appearances and enters the 2023 Classic having won nine of its last 11 games with wins over Nebraska (2005), Western Kentucky (2008), Tulsa (2012), UMass (2013), USF (2014), Florida Atlantic (2016), Manhattan (2017), Saint Louis (2018), and USF (2019). The Seminoles are 3-0 in the Orange Bowl Classic against Florida State teams with two wins over USF and one over Florida Atlantic.
