I’m a celebrity… Get me out of here! fans seem to have undergone a dramatic change in their opinion of Matt Hancock as many are now hoping he wins.

The former health secretary, 44, received massive amounts of criticism when it emerged he had agreed to become a contestant on this year’s series.

But after surviving the first three eliminations, many viewers now seem to want the controversial MP, who will reportedly pocket £400,000 for the show, to be crowned King of the Jungle.

His unpopularity at the start of the show was perhaps enhanced by his being voted into six consecutive Bushtucker Trials.

Now, however, viewers seem to have turned to politics.

On Twitter, one fan wrote: “Matt Hancock to win, love it,” while another added: “Sean, Matt, Jill and Owen for the final 4, I’d love any of them to win.”

Several fans simply wrote: “May Matt win,” while another said he was “the best.”

However, not all viewers were convinced, with one writing: “The people who say Matt Hancock is winning because he’s ‘humble and nice’ need their heads taken off.”

Another added: “So weird how Matt Hancock went on I’m a celebrity and all of a sudden people forgot about everything he did on this side and actually want him to win because the other camp mates are ‘mean to him’ is this real ? Are you kidding me please?

Another viewer said: “If Matt Hancock wins I’m a celebrity I’ll be writing a complaint email to Ofcom.”

Matt was forced to step down as health minister last June after CCTV images showed him in an embrace with his married lover Gina Colaangelo, 44, at the Department of Health at the height of the pandemic.

But speaking to a business podcast in February, he said the relationship started “quite quickly” after legal restrictions on social distancing were lifted and replaced with guidelines.

Speaking to The Diary of a CEO podcast, Matt said he “fell in love” with Coladangelo after getting her to work with him.

He told Dragons’ Den podcast host, entrepreneur and investor Steven Bartlett: “It actually happened after the rules were lifted but the guidelines were still in place. I resigned because I broke social distancing rules until then.

“They weren’t really rules.” They were not law. But that’s not the point.

“The point is, they were the guidelines I was offering. And it happened because I fell in love with someone.

People had to stay two meters away from anyone outside the household or bubble, according to guidelines at the time.

Matt emphasized that his relationship with Miss Colaangelo was serious, saying he hated that some “somehow got the impression that it was [casual sex]’.

The father-of-three expressed his regret for the pain the affair had caused after he caused the break-up of his 15-year marriage to wife Martha to be with Miss Colaangelo – who was also married with three children.

He added that he had known Miss Colaangelo for “more than half my life”, since they worked together on student radio at Oxford University.

She was brought by him to the health department for help with “public communications.”

Matt said: “Ironically we spent a lot of time together trying to get me to be able to communicate in a more emotionally intelligent way.

“And we fell in love. And this is something that was completely out of my control.

He also admitted that the government knew that some measures it took during the pandemic were “very harmful”.
