Lake County Music Guide – 01.24.23 – The Bloom

I’m really shocked guys for two reasons! Lakeport’s Soper-Reese Theater and Conocty Harbor Resort have been Lake County’s premier concert venues for more than 25 years. Both delivered some pretty impressive musical entertainment; Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Brooks & Dunn, Joe Louis Walker, Lyle Lovett, Barry Melton – just to name a few. Unfortunately, in 2009 Konocti Harbor temporarily ceased all operations, leaving Soper Reese as the county’s premier concert hall for the next ten years. When the COVID pandemic reared its ugly head in 2020, forcing businesses to close, the theater also closed its doors. Until then, the SRT was home to The Lake County Symphony, a number of musical, educational and cultural events, classic films and a venue for important fundraising events.

On February 5th (not this week – the week after), from 2 to 4:00 expect the live music concerts at SRT to begin again (in small steps, of course…). The first is “Live from Blue Wing’s 100th Radio Show” featuring Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums, guitarist Carmen Getit and saxophonist Nancy Wright. This event will be recorded, re-mastered and then sent to several Nor Cal radio stations for broadcast. I was their guest artist last month, but this one is extra special because it marks the 100th of these shows produced by BW Music Director Paul Kemp.

When Konocti Harbor Resort reopens in the spring, Lake County will have three true concert settings; SRT, KHR and CCW, (Cache Creek Winery), in Oaks. I can not wait! Oh, and the other reason I’m excited is that I just bought a new guitar. But in the meantime, here’s our live local lineup for the week of 24/02 to 30/02…

Kelsey Creek Brewing in Kelseyville will be whipping up good times on Tuesday (the official 1st day of the week) with excellent craft beers, beer and seltzer, along with music by Buskin’ for Brewskis from 3-6:00. Then on Sunday afternoon, get ready for a true Lake County gem as Cowboy Johnson and Chris Rovetti with percussion from Kraig Jillson as they rock the joint with Americana, country, blues and some top notch music at the Juke Joint Honky Tonk. You don’t want to miss this! All this and more from 3 to 6:00. Yahoo!

On Wednesday, the jam continues when Hopland Tap presents the Blues Invitational Jam featuring Wendy Dewitt, Kirk Harwood and Pierre Archain from 7 to 10 p.m. And while the house band is rockin’ enough to make the night great fun, they often bring in a Bay Area blues artist to break up the jams!

The Saw Shop Public House in Kelseyville always has one of the best menus in the county, but on Thursdays from 6 to 9:00 they have some of the best blues you can expect in this county when Dave Broida and the Blues Farm give you that 1 ,4,5 magic that only they can produce. WOW! Then on Sundays, for their brunch, expect Aiken and Baird to bring you the real deal from 11 to 1:30. Eat, drink, absorb…

It’s another fargin Fargo Friday at the Smiling Dogs Tasting Room in Kelseyville! Enjoy some excellent wines (by the glass or bottle), plus the excellent music of those fargin Fargo Bros from 6:30 to 9:30. What a way to start your weekend?!?

Time Travelers will be rocking the Elks Lodge in Lakeport Friday night from 6 to 10:00. There is a $10 envelope and a large dance floor. You just can’t go wrong!
Twin Pine Casino in Middletown will feature the fun rock music of Super Bad on Friday and Saturday, both from 9am to 1am.

Musicians, ATTENTION! The Redwood Valley Grange will host another Music Flea Market on Saturday from 11 to 3:00. Buy, sell, trade – everything is good at this flea market. Trade those Voice of the Theaters for something you need even more, and there’s someone who will want it more. It’s all there!

Saturday is wine and rock day when the Fargo Bros rock the Shannon Ridge Mercantile in Finley from 4 to 7:00. Hey, it’s two of my favorite things – Fargo and wine, (oh, and beer and Jack…)!

On Saturday, O’Meara Bros Brewing in Lakeport will have fine craft beers and beer plus music by Mike Guarniro (hey, that’s me!) from 6 to 9:00. Great menu, great drinks and me, making it the perfect trifecta for the perfect date night.

Riviera Hills Lounge in Riviera is pleased to bring back, by popular demand, Dave Broida and the Blues Farm on Saturdays from 6-10pm. Some of the best blues you’ll find at The LC will be happening Saturday at the RHL. What more do you need?!?

If you’re in Lakeport on a Saturday night from 7-9:00 why not stop by Andre’s Lounge and check out the Blue Hour band. Featuring Jon and Kim Thomas, Chris Clark and Cynthia Ganoung, this excellent jazz-lite band is making a name for itself! Come and see for yourself…

Robinson Rancheria Casino Lounge is excited to present Saturday night from 9 to 1:00 the exciting Central Valley country band, The Ariel Jean Band. This excellent group of three lady singers will blow your mind with their three-way harmonies. And as a bonus, local musician John Gormley will be playing bass tonight, rounding out the music.

Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake will bring you everything you need for a weekend of food, ambiance and music just like any other weekend. On Friday, expect the Majide Trio to enthrall you with popular songs from an older era of music from 6 to 8:00. On Saturday night, Steve Winkle will entertain your guests from 6 to 8:00. For their Sunday brunch, it will feature the music of pianist Tom Ganung from 11:30 to 2:00. Then on Sunday night, BW will bring you great Americana music from Sarah Tichava from 6 to 8:00. And get ready for some fun Monday blues when Those Guys take the stage from 6 to 8:00. It’s always a good idea to make reservations.

Karaoke and Open Mic/Open Jams
Twin Pine Casino will present Karaoke on Thursdays from 7 to 10:00 p.m.
Riviera Hills Lounge will be offering Karaoke Fridays from 6 to 10:00.
Robinson Rancheria Casino will host karaoke on Fridays from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM.

Okay, here’s a silly joke… What does Roget eat for breakfast? Synonymous roll… Tee hee hee! So if you’re heading out this weekend for some live local music, have fun, but be safe…

Mike Guarniero

Mike has been playing professionally, both acoustic and electric, for 40+ years. During the 1980s and 1990s, he contributed to a solid music scene in Sonoma County, then DJed for 10 years after moving to Lake County in 1996. After retiring from his job of 26 years ago, because he recognized the growing local music scene, he decided to dedicate his time again to live music. He never looked back. Along with his regular band, Dr. Groove, he has played lead guitar for local bands (Fargo Bros, Blues Farm, CAM Band, Borrowed Time, Time Travelers). He has played acoustic guitar at some of our local wineries, restaurants, farmers markets and art galleries. He is also a semi-regular emcee at various local open mics around Lake County. He writes and records original songs and has recorded original demos for other artists as well. For the past three years, he’s posted a local music guide called the Lake County Music Guide on Facebook.
