This is the first of two meetings between the teams, and for the first time in 10 years, Minnesota is the underdog at home in this series.

It will be the first time in six seasons against the Lions that the Vikings won’t be led by Cousins, who had 22 TD throws and just two interceptions to win eight of the 10 games against Detroit.

In his place is Nick Mullens, who started for the first time in two seasons last week in a 27-24 overtime loss at Cincinnati.

Detroit QB Jared Goff will make his 33rd straight start for the Lions and is coming off the second game of an eight-year career in which he had five TD passes and no interceptions. The other came in 2018 against the Vikings.

Lions betting news

Detroit bounced back nicely from a 28-13 loss to Chicago in Week 14 to outlast visiting Denver last week. It was the seventh time the Lions have topped 30 points in a game this season.

They welcomed back two-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow to the lineup against the Broncos after he sat out against the Bears with a knee injury.

Rookie tight end Sam LaPorta caught three of those scoring passes against Denver, giving him a team-best nine this season.

Vikings betting news

With last week’s loss, the Vikings are no longer in control of their destiny in the division race. As the current sixth seed in the playoff standings, they remain in charge of their fate of getting a Wild Card berth.

Mullens is the guy the team is counting on these days. He is the team’s fourth starter at QB this season after Minnesota looked to veteran Joshua Dobbs and rookie Jaron Hall after Cousins’ injury.

Mullens had two TD passes and two interceptions deep in Bengals territory in last week’s OT loss at Cincinnati in which Minnesota blew a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. Mullens, whose career record as a starter is 5-13, actually had a third interception that was returned for an apparent score, but the play was overturned due to a penalty.

Surprisingly the Vikings ground game flourished last week behind backup RB Ty Chandler’s 132 yards. He replaces Alexander Matheson (ankle), who remains questionable since midweek.

Lions vs Vikings Predictions

Mullens threw for 303 yards last week, but was often reckless with his passes. Goff, by contrast, has thrown just two interceptions in the past month.

And Detroit’s two-headed running attack of Gibbs and Montgomery is better than anything the Vikings can do, especially with Matheson not 100 percent.

Minnesota star WR Justin Jefferson is indeed back after a hamstring forced him to miss time, but he won’t be enough to change the outcome.
