A fumble in which the player simply dropped the ball ended up being a critical blow for Under bettors in Sunday’s San Francisco 49ers-Philadelphia Eagles NFC Championship game.
Two touchdowns in an 80-second span late in the first half sandwiched around the fumble had the under over/under (O/U) bettors tearing up their tickets.
Speaking of the Under, a bettor won a cool million after betting the Under on the AFC Championship game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Welcome to the world of wacky wins and bad beats in sports betting.
Each week we’ll recap the betting games where some people cashed in and others tore up their tickets in frustration. To paraphrase the famous broadcaster Al Michaels, “these plays are meaningful to some.”
Let’s dive into this week’s madness!
Under quickly turns into Over, done Roger
Gamblers betting on first half Under 22.5 combined San Francisco-Philadelphia points were in good shape early in the second quarter as the teams strung together five straight possessions as the Eagles led 7-0.
The 49ers tied it at 7 midway through the second quarter. Under a still comfortable cover.
The Eagles led 14-7 with 96 seconds left in the half. As long as nothing catastrophic happens, Under bettors will make money.
You know what follows – disaster for gamblers holding Under tickets.
San Francisco backup quarterback Josh Johnson – 49ers fourth QB! – made a costly blunder when he simply missed the click of the rifle. Hassan Redick recovered at the 30 at the 49 with 1:11 left.
A costly facemask penalty with 21 seconds left gave the Eagles a first-and-goal from the 10.
Boston Scott ran around the right end on the next play for a TD, making it 21-7 with 16 seconds left.
Two touchdowns in an 80-second span after the teams combined for seven points in the game’s opening 21 1/2 minutes.
Under the punters were toast.
But Scott’s TD paid off well for bettors who backed him at +550 to score a TD anytime.
Kelce favors punters
Kansas City star tight end Travis Kelce is Mr. Reliable for the Chiefs, but his status against Cincinnati was in question.
FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that Kelce was injured in practice and received anti-inflammatory treatment Friday and Saturday. But that didn’t stop punters from betting on him.
Kelce paid off the leading touchdown scorer (+650) and all TD scorer (-120) bettors when he hauled in a 14-yard TD pass from QB Patrick Mahomes with 3:53 left in the first half to extend the lead to Kansas City to 13 -3.
The 49ers-Eagles punter is very big
Congratulations to the four-way bettor on the 49ers-Eagles game who turned $25 into a $3,525 win.
The bettor cashed in their money at +14101 when his four-footer was hit – Eagles moneyline, Philly’s Miles Sanders first TD scorer, San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey always first half TD scorer and Hurts scorer every time.
Pacheco’s supporters sing the blues
While Kelce bettors are cashing in, Kansas City rookie Isiah Pacheco backers are signing with the Blues. The running back appeared to score the first touchdown of the game, but the yellow handkerchief ruined things for the early Pacheco TD bettors (+850).
It looked like he would score on a 14-yard TD pass with less than a minute left in the first quarter, but he held it all up… yes, a holding penalty killed the game, much to the delight of Kelce supporters.
The Chiefs eventually kicked a field goal for a 6-0 lead.
It hurts so good for TD punters
It wasn’t much of a surprise when Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts scored a rushing touchdown in the third quarter.
Hurts was only +100 (bet $10 to win $20 total) to win a TD anytime, but as the wise bettors say, “it’s better as a bettor to collect a small win than lose a potentially larger one profit.
Big Under bettor wins money
Kudos to the gambler who bet $1.2M on Bengals-Chiefs O/U of 49 total points. The bettor bought the hook just to be on the safe side.
The bettor won a cool $1 million when the Chiefs beat the Bengals 23-20.
Stay tuned for more shenanigans!
