STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Two classes of first graders from PS 59 got an in-depth look at the businesses offered along Forest Ave. as part of their latest field trip.
Students and their parents from The Harbor View School were hosted by the Forest Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) on Thursday, March 23, 2023. This unique trip provided the children with an opportunity to touch base with the various businesses located along Forest Ave.
The students began today’s venture with a visit to Pastosa Ravioli at 764 Forest Ave. The specialty market is known for its authentic Italian imports, including their pastas, meats and cheeses. Before leaving the establishment, the young people were given a pack of crayons, a pencil, a notebook and a sticker. Even the parents did not leave empty handed as they were provided with a copy of the catering menu.
The next stop on the extensive tour was Morretti’s Bakery at 640 Forest Ave. Chizna, the shop owner, greeted the children by welcoming them into the oven area on the condition that they do not touch anything. There, children could see fresh cakes being baked before receiving their very own cupcake or cookie.
The delightful deep dive would continue to Philly’s Bagel Factory at 604 Forest Ave. Here the students looked through the shop window, admiring the bagel making process. Similar to the previous stop, the students were treated to handmade bagels before they left.
Taking a short break from biting, the budding youngster stopped by Fresh Kills Barbershop at 600 Forest Ave. First graders watched another child get their hair cut. While there, they also learned that it takes ten months to go through the process to become a full barber.
Before their tour ended, the students appeared at the Spotlight Theater Company at 358 Forest Ave. When they were done there, they enjoyed a closing pizza lunch at Café Milano, located at 401 Forest Ave.
Parents and teachers alike expressed their surprise at the variety of offerings on Forest Ave., saying they would return to visit. The trip has proven so popular that Tottenville High School and PS 45 have already requested to visit the BID.
