Business is booming in Spartanburg County. Investment commitments in 2022 exceeded $4 billion, more than doubling the $1.9 billion investment commitments in 2021. Overall, they reached $4.023 billion and accounted for more than 2,500 jobs. “Our success is because of the people who actually live here, that’s why we’re so successful,” said Spartanburg County Council Vice President David Britt. Britt has helped attract business to Spartanburg County for over 30 years. He remembers the celebration when investments in 1991 reached $5 million. Of course, that number grows when BMW comes to Spartanburg. “The golden goose was BMW, but what the people of Spartanburg did – they proved to the world that we build the best product in the world, right here in Spartanburg. We build the ultimate powertrain – BMWs. And we’ve been doing this for 30 years and the world has taken notice. That’s why these companies are flocking to come to Spartanburg,” Britt said. $1.7 billion of the investment in 2022 comes from BMW. Part of which is for a high-voltage battery assembly facility in Woodruff. This comes after significant investment in recent years, including Osh-Kosh Defense, which is making the US Postal Service’s new fleet of vehicles. “The fact is, if you’re not growing — and people have asked me this question, ‘Aren’t we growing too fast?’ Aren’t we attracting too many people here? We have more traffic than we are used to seeing. If you’re not growing, you’re dying,” he said. “We have a great board that’s pro-business, and when we have a company, we vet them and when we bring it to the table — when my economic development committee, made up of Jack Mabry and Manning Lynch – when we put it to the council, it’s a 7-0 vote.” South Carolina as a whole in 2022 had $10 billion in investment. Spartanburg County accounts for more than 40% of that. In 2022, Greenville County had more than $468 million, Anderson County had $279 million, Cherokee County had $88 million and Lexington County had $448 million.
