Beckville junior basketball players JayKoby Williams and Jackelvin Smith were named to the Texas Basketball Coaches Association 2A Region III All-Region Team. This is the second year in a row that Williams has accomplished the feat and the first for Smith.
Carthage sophomore Kaylen Igbokwe was named to the 4A Region III All-Region Team.
Panola Men’s Basketball
Panola College men’s basketball coach Mike Nesbitt was named Region XIV North Zone Coach of the Year, while John Wilson and Japheth Mundy received first-team all-North Zone honors. Moundi was also named Region XIV First Team All-Region.
Panola sophomore Marcus Greene was named Second Team All-Region XIV and Second Team North All-Conference.
Panola’s Chrishawn Christmas and Kyndall Davis were named to the Region XIV Conference Honorable Mention Team.
Beckville Softball
Bethany Grangeorge, Bailey Quinn, Kaitlyn Mauritzen, Natalie Pelzl and Amber Harris each had two hits as Beckville combined for 14 hits, defeating host Martinsville 20-3 in a three-inning District 22-2A game on Tuesday. Harris had a pair of doubles with five RBIs and two runs.
Quinn had a double with three RBIs and three runs, Pelzl two RBIs and three runs and Mauritzen scored twice. Emily Grangeorge tripled with an RBI and three runs scored, and Lexi Barr doubled with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. The Ladycats totaled 11 walks.
Beckville (8-13 overall, 3-0 District 22-2A) will host Joaquin on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Carthage Softball
Sophomore Jiyia Williams hit a pair of doubles with a pair of RBIs and a run scored as the Carthage Lady Bulldogs softball team overcame a four-run deficit to defeat visiting Hue Springs for a 7-5 victory on Monday.
Jayda Walton doubled and scored a run, Addie Kneip and Tessa Smith singled, with Kneip scoring once and Smith twice, while Mallory Tutt singled with an RBI and a run.
Tutt picked up the win in the circle, throwing all seven innings, allowing five hits, five runs (two earned), two walks and three strikeouts.
Carthage will open District 17-4A play on Tuesday when the Lady Bulldogs host Center at 6 p.m.
Beckville Baseball
Aidan Brantley threw his second straight no-hitter as Beckville beat visiting Carlisle 11-0 in a four-inning mercy rule game in District 19-2A on Tuesday. Brantley walked none and struck out eight. The sophomore also had an RBI and scored twice.
Baker Seegers went 2-2 with two RBI and a run and Daxton Etheridge doubled with an RBI and a run. Jackson Lambright had a pair of RBIs and a run scored while Beckville had just three hits in the game. The Bearcats improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in district play.
Beckville will visit New Summerfield on Tuesday at 6 p.m
Gary Baseball
Mason Smith threw a five-hitter as Gary defeated Mount Enterprise 14-0 in a five-inning District 23-2A mercy rule game. The senior walked two and struck out seven and also went 3-3 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored.
David Stevens and Aidan Scoggins both went 2-3, with Stevens adding a double, four RBI and a run, and Scoggins an RBI and a run. Ben Stevens doubled in a run while Gary finished with nine hits, improving to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in district play.
Carthage Girls Soccer
The Carthage Lady Bulldogs soccer team closed out its regular season on a high note, defeating host Center 1-1 (4-3 shootouts) in a District 15-4A game on Monday.
Bryna Hill scored the go-ahead goal off an assist from Lexi Lopez.
Junior goalkeeper Destiny Allison finished with six saves in the cage for the Lady Bulldogs.
Carthage finished the regular season with a 16-6 overall record and an 11-3 record in district play. The Lady ‘Dawgs have secured the No. 3 seed in the district playoffs and will face Palestine next week.
Carthage Boys Soccer
Adrian Lopez scored off an assist from Lalo Hernandez in the Carthage Bulldogs’ 4-1 loss to host Center in the District 15-4A final for both teams on Tuesday.
Senior goalie Jacob Whatley finished with 13 saves in the cage for the Bulldogs.
Carthage finished the season with a 10-11-3 overall record and 7-7 in district play.
Carthage will graduate seniors Cristian Barcenas, Damian Romero, Eric Picasso, Carlos Garcia, Richard Lopez, Umberto Benitez, Hector Rivera, Omar Medrano and Whatley from this year’s team.
Amateur golf
Carthage freshman Jett Surratt finished tied for 67th in the 16th annual Texas Cup Invitational at Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater on Wednesday.
The freshman carded rounds of 72-82-83 in the 54-hole event.
Andrew Petruzzelli of Dallas won the event, finishing with a -7,209 (71-72-66).
