TENNECO’S POWER BUSINESS ADDS HYDROGEN TO ITS STRONG ALTERNATIVE FUELS ENGINE TESTING CAPABILITIES

  • Advanced testing capabilities established in Burscheid, Germanyand in Southeast Michigan for internal combustion engines (ICE) powered by hydrogen (H2)
  • ICE’s expertise used to support vehicle and engine manufacturers in various ICE decarbonisation approaches for sector-specific CO2-neutral solutions for mobility

NORTHVILLE, MI, February 1, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Tenneco has established new hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine test facilities at its Powertrain Test Centers in Burscheid, Germanyand Ann Arbor, Michigan. These two test cells, specifically designed for hydrogen ICEs, enhance the company’s globally integrated ICE test capabilities, supporting engine and original equipment (OE) vehicle manufacturers as they decarbonize ICEs. By adding H2-engine testing, Tenneco is well-positioned to provide technology solutions that can help accelerate the carbon reduction of future generations of internal combustion engines to meet global climate goals more quickly.

“We support a pragmatic approach of complementary technologies that provide solutions for different transport sectors,” said Stefan Rittman, vice president, engineering in Tenneco’s Powertrain business group. “We argue that it is not the internal combustion engine technology that causes greenhouse gas emissions in the use phase of the product; it is the fuel used in the ICE that determines the vehicles emissions. Therefore, green hydrogen, which is produced from renewable energy and carbon-free in nature, offers great potential for cleaner transport, especially in sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy-duty commercial vehicles, on-highway and off-highway applications, as and in the industrial and maritime sectors.”

As a leading supplier of engine components – including pistons, piston rings, bearings, seals and gaskets, valves, valve seats and guides, and ignition devices – Tenneco leverages its comprehensive ICE expertise in various hydrogen and alternative project partnerships motor fuels and vehicle manufacturers. Tenneco’s new test cells support manufacturers in their H2 ICE concepts, testing prototype engines and components for durability, wear, emissions, fuel efficiency and performance.

“Using our knowledge of hydrogen’s impact on the combustion process and on the Powertrain Control Unit (PCU), we are able to address hydrogen-specific challenges such as pre-ignition and H2-sliding in the crankcase, as well as the effect on tribology and materials,” said Dr. Stephen Hoppe, director of Powertrain Technology Rings & Liners, Tenneco. “R&D by our H2 test benches, along with support from our simulation tools like PRiME3D®can accelerate the development process and help our customers bring to market high-performance H2 internal combustion engines faster.”

“Tenneco is committed to being a good corporate citizen; you see it in our operations and in our products,” he added Troy Cantola, Powertrain Engineering Director, Technical Services. “Our efforts to improve our test sites reflect this in that we are now equipped to serve our customers’ aspirations to reduce or completely eliminate fuel-related CO22 emissions as quickly as possible.”

Tenneco’s new H2 ICE test facilities provide a wide bandwidth of high-precision engine measurement capabilities, including:

  • Testing of light and heavy motors up to 700kW
  • Eddy currents and AC dyno
  • ECU connectivity, calibration and setup:
    • dynamic engine operation; drive cycles / engine in cycle
