To kick things off with a classic, why not spend your Halloween weekend watching one of the best horror movies of all time? Sissy Spacek plays the teenage lead in the Carrie, a frequently bullied high school student who develops terrifying telekinetic abilities. Between mean girls at school and her insanely religious mother (the late Piper Laurie), she’s under all kinds of pressure—no wonder when she explodes in one of the most iconic scenes in horror history. Carrie is available to stream on Max.

Moving on to something more contemporary, the Blumhouse hit M3GAN is ripe for re-watching this time of year. Creepy dolls have long been a mainstay of horror, but this film takes it to another level. After the death of her sister, toy engineer Gemma (Alison Williams) takes in her niece and decides to make her a new friend – literally. The result is equal parts campy and creepy, making for a frighteningly good time. M3GAN (the unrated version) is streaming on Amazon ( AMZN ) Prime.

Jordan Peele made his directorial debut (and won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay) with this ingenious take on horror. Daniel Kaluuya stars as Chris, a young black man who wants to meet the parents of his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) on a weekend trip. His fears of microaggressions and casual racism are well founded as a startling plot emerges. Get out is available to stream on Netflix (NFLX).

A24 seems to have its own special brand of horror, focusing on the weird and creepy rather than bombastic jump scares. One of the most successful of this breed is Ari Aster Hereditarywhich put him on the map for later cult favorites like Midsummer and Bo is afraid. Hereditary stars Toni Collette as a woman consumed by grief over several major losses in her family, leaving room in her psyche for an unseen force to take over. Hereditary is available to stream on Max.

Train to Busan

Unfortunately, just as the train leaves, a zombie apocalypse descends on the tracks. The undead population on the train grows as the corridors of the cars grow narrower. The witch

Anya Taylor-Joy is one of the biggest stars today and has the horrors of A24’s period The witch Yes thank you. More creepy and eerie than downright scary, this is a thoroughly unsettling watch. The witch is available to stream on Max.

Bloody, inventive and slightly ridiculous, mom is one of the great slasher films of the last decade. Octavia Spencer plays the titular character, who succumbs to buying alcohol for a group of teenagers before inviting them to her house under the guise of safe drinking. As Ma’s place becomes a hot spot for the town’s high school parties, her own past in the community emerges. Purple peak

For more gothic vibes this Halloween, stream Guillermo del Toro Purple peak. The director’s deft artistic and atmospheric touch is on full display in this eerie period romance starring Mia Wasikowska as a wealthy young heiress and author courted by a charming and mysterious Englishman (Tom Hiddleston). American psychopath

While it may be a year-round favorite for some, American psychopath is the perfect watch for this season. Christian Bale stars as the iconic Patrick Bateman, an investment banker serial killer in 1980s New York who is as obsessed with business cards as he is with finding his next victim. Satirical and ultra-violent, it’s a polarizing film that makes for an interesting addition to the slasher subgenre. Plus it has a stellar supporting cast. American psychopath is available to stream on Peacock.

Coco may not fit the parameters of a horror movie, being a Disney ( DIS ) Pixar animated film and all, but it’s certainly still seasonal.
