Tide Softball took two games Friday in Birmingham over UAB and Western Carolina

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama softball opened play at the Green & Gold Classic on Friday with a pair of wins, defeating tournament host UAB, 8-0, in five innings before defeating Western Carolina, 4-1.

Alabama (13-0) started the day with a bang, scoring eight runs in the first inning against UAB (5-7), including To Jenna Johnson first home run of the season. With the score tied in the bottom of the fourth, the Blazers had three hits to load the bases with nobody out, but the Crimson Tide erased the threat with a strikeout and a 1-2-3 double play. with Alex Salter in relief in the circle in the bottom of the fifth, a 1-4-3 double play ended up ending the ballgame and securing a run-rule out.

In the second game against Western Carolina (2-3), a pair of singles by Bailey Dowling and Lauren Johnson drove in three runs before the Catamounts gave up one on an RBI sac fly in the top of the fourth. A Marley Giles An RBI single added some insurance in the fifth inning, but Alley Johnson threw 2.0 innings of relief to close the shutout and earn his first save of the season.

Eight Tide players had at least one RBI between the two games, with Jenna Johnson led the pack with three of his first-inning home run against UAB. Kenley Cahalan was 3-for-6 on the day with four others earning two hits. in the circle Kayla Beaver (4-0) picked up the win against the Blazers while Comrade Torrance (5-0) picked up the win against the Catamounts and Alley Johnson won the save.

“It was a good day for us. The first inning against UAB was huge for us. Scoring 13 points and scoring eight runs on seven hits was just a great start to the day. Defense and pitching did the rest We made some shots in the second game but both Jaala [Torrence] and Alley [Johnson] gave us a great performance on the pitch.”
