Volkswagen is bringing ChatGPT to its cars for AI conversations, but is it a good idea?

Volkswagen has chosen CES 2024 as the platform to launch the upcoming ChatGPT functionality in its vehicles, saying the AI chatbot will be available in the ID range of electric vehicles (via an over-the-air update in applicable vehicles) as well as the Tiguan. Passat and the upcoming Golf internal combustion engine cars later this year.

To do this, VW has teamed up with Cerence to use its “automotive-grade” AI platform Chat Pro, which enables ChatGPT integration. This expands on the German brand’s existing IDA voice assistant so that it can now handle natural speech prompts both for controlling the car’s functionality and for broader inquiries.
