When are Netflix movies and series returning to filming?

As of May 2023, and especially July 2023, most of Hollywood is shut down, with all upcoming Netflix projects on hold at various stages of development. With the strikes seemingly over, things are getting back to normal with movies and series expecting to start or restart production.

Please note that this list is subject to change. Things are pretty fluid right now with production starting up, with everyone clamoring to get back into production at the same time and a lot of things need to be set up to get things moving.

  • Aurora – Director Kathryn Bigelow’s new film is set to begin production in early 2024.
  • Cobra Kai (Season 6) – Early 2024 TBD – was originally set to begin shooting in Atlanta the day after the writer’s strike began in May 2023.
  • Emily in Paris (Season 4) – Filming is expected to begin on January 15, 2024 in Paris and Rome.
  • Frankenstein – The new Guillermo del Toro is set to begin filming under the working title The Prodigal Father in Toronto from February 2024.
  • MONSTERS: The Story of Lyle and Eric Menendez – DAHMER’s next series will focus on the Menendez brothers. It was originally set to begin filming in September 2023, but will now take place from mid-December to next March.

  • Stranger Things (Season 5) – Conflicting reports on this. David Harbor has suggested that production could begin as soon as mid-to-late November 2023, while other reports suggest that the cameras themselves won’t start rolling until the first full week of work in January 2024. Meanwhile, one source states that a date hasn’t been officially set for the massive Netflix original, which will likely be in production for a full year.
  • That ’90s Show (Season 2) – Live recordings will begin in Los Angeles from December 1, 2023.

  • The Lincoln Lawyer (Season 3) – Filming will begin in Los Angeles in January 2024. We hear that filming will continue until May 2024.
  • Madness (Limited Series) – Production on this new limited series was halted midway through, but according to the Directors Guild of Canada, production is expected to resume in January 2024.
Sandman Season 2 will resume filming in November 2023

  • The Sandman (Season 2) – The second season was in progress but was put on hold after the actor’s strike began. Neil Gaiman has confirmed that season 2 will begin again on November 27.
  • The Umbrella Academy (Season 4) – Reshoots for the fourth and final season (due in 2024) took place in mid-November 2023.
  • The Witcher (Season 4) – Preparations for the new season of The Witcher will not begin until early 2024, according to RedanianIntelligence, which reports that seasons 4 and 5 may be filmed back-to-back.
  • Unstable (Season 2) – Just announced to be renewed, the Rob Lowe-helmed comedy begins filming in late November and runs through January 2024.
  • An untitled Arctic comedy project with CBC and APTN – Filming to begin in Canada in March 2024 and wrap in June.
  • Wednesday (Season 2) – Originally scheduled to begin in the fall of 2023, Netflix’s biggest show in history is set to relocate to Ireland for Season 2 and begin filming in late April 2024, according to Deadline.
