YOTTAA Releases 2023 E-Commerce Technology Index

WALTHAM, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–YOTTAA, Inc., the leading cloud-based e-commerce acceleration platform, today announced the release of the latest version of the company’s annual index of the performance of third-party technologies used on e-commerce sites. “2023 E-Commerce Technology Index” is designed to help retailers explore new technologies for their sites and understand the impact third parties can have on overall site performance.

Brands and retailers are adding more and more technology to their e-commerce stack in pursuit of conversion, traffic and operational profit. In the past year alone, the number of third-party technologies installed on a retail site has increased by 19%, with the typical site adding seven additional e-commerce technologies. But beyond the innovation gains promised by these technologies, many retailers are struggling to quantify their impact on site speed, online experience and conversion.

The 2023 E-Commerce Technology Index examines the impact on site performance of 619 of the most widely adopted e-commerce third parties. The data in this report was collected over the course of one month (December 2022), representing 5.5 billion page views from nearly 2,000 e-commerce sites using YOTTAA’s e-commerce acceleration solutions. As part of its platform, YOTTAA’s third-party knowledge base is a comprehensive repository of third-party data that grows with every page view, adding hundreds of millions of real-world buyer data points every day.

Through this knowledge base, YOTTAA has deep visibility into site performance data from all third parties used by its clients. The YOTTAA platform also detects violations of the site performance of individual third parties. These violations are used to create Performance Impact Ratings (PIRs). Using these PIRs, YOTTAA assigned a color code of red, yellow and green to each third party rated in the index in the most commonly used e-commerce technology categories. Slower loading third parties are marked in red, neutrals are in yellow, and faster loading technologies are in green.

Below are some of the key findings from the 2023 E-Commerce Technology Index:

  • 17% are in the red – Of the 619 third-party e-commerce technologies evaluated in the index, 17% received a “red” rating, meaning their presence on an e-commerce site has a consistently negative impact on the site’s performance.
  • Key technical features are slow – The impact on site performance varies by technology category, and the categories with the most red scores in the index are those that are very important to brands, such as user-generated content, chat and commerce search. As a result, retailers should expect a more severe impact on site performance from these categories.
  • Some basic web metrics are hard to achieve – Largest Contentful Paint is the Core Web Vital metric that worries ecommerce brands the most. The technology categories that make it the most difficult for brands to meet this Google metric are image hosting, CMS and tag management.
  • Optimization = Faster sites and higher conversions – To realize the full potential of third-party technologies, each must be optimized to limit the negative impact on site performance. For example, findings show that reducing just 1 second of page load time by optimizing 3rd parties and other digital elements on the site reduced bounces by 9% and increased conversions by 6%.

“As brands continue to rely on the benefits and ROI of third-party technologies, they must also evaluate and weigh the total cost of integration, including their impact on site performance,” said Rich Standardo, CEO of YOTTAA. “The 2023 eCommerce Technology Index provides brands with detailed third-party performance data on their sites so they can best measure the overall impact their technology stacks are having on their business.”
