Dolphins of the Indian River are amazing creatures that have evolved into rivers under their primary habitat, the ancient tethys sea, about 50 million years ago, the World Wildlife Fund reports.
Today, they are very disappearing and faced with a new threat: microplastics.
The new study investigated the gastrointestinal tract of the five dead Indian River Dolphin and found that they were heavily contaminated with plastic waste.
What is going on?
Since the humidification object has been built, the Indian River dolphins have been limited to a 750 mile stretch continuing from Pakistan to India, which has led to a significant decrease in the WWF data.
This waterway is considered one of the most contaminated in the world.
After researching the deceased vessel river dolphins or IRD gastrointestinal tract, researchers hoped to better understand the environmental impact of microplastics and how they move upwards in the food chain.
“Microplastics is transmitted to the food chain, and IRDS, as predators of the tops, accumulate them along with additives, including bisphenols and phthalates, which have been proven to be endocrine suffering from chemicals,” the study authors explained, writes phys.org.
These substances can “cause digestive dysfunction, oxidative stress, immune disorder and reproductive toxicity, while threatening to health, survival and resistance,” the authors said.
Researchers found that many microplastic and nanoplastic particles of dolphins in the intestine were the same as in their prey, showing how plastic contamination moves from one species to another.
The study revealed that 94.76% of the plastics found in the dead dolphin had fiber and more than half of PET.
“The polymers stem from plastic ropes, fishing nets, plastic bottles and bags and agricultural leakage, which indicates that they accumulate in intense anthropomorphic interventions,” the authors said, writes Phys.org.
In other words, the investigation has abolished doubts that plastic waste was to blame for human activity.
Why is plastic pollution important?
Microplastic particles have now contaminated every corner of the world and even our own bodies. Although we still need to learn about the goals of microplasty influenced by the bodies and the environment of life, what experts know has caused great concern.
“There are so many unknown individuals, but we see more data showing that microplasty influences human biology,” said Harvard Medical Publication Bernard lemos from the Harvard University School of Public Health.
According to Harvard medicine, microplastics have been observed to disrupt live bodies in cells and even at the genetic level, causing conditions that are well -recognized by cancer precursors.
Microplastic pollution is also found to contaminate food sources, soil, water supply and even the air we breathe in, affecting the environment and, ultimately, human health.
What is it done?
The only way to reduce the amount of plastic pollution entering the environment and our body is to significantly reduce the production of new plastic. As soon as a small part of the used plastic is recycled and many plastic materials are integral, the world cannot recycle a plastic problem.
According to the International Union of Nature and Natural Resources, the world produces more than 500 million tons of plastic each year, of which about 22 million tons fall into the world’s oceans.
