Carbohydrate cutting is a hot diet whim that allows you to lose weight or lower your blood sugar, but it can sink – especially when you need to live longer, new research shows.
According to the University of Tuft, instead of fear of bread and other carbohydrate foods, we should focus on the right choice to increase our chances of staying healthy as they grow older.
Their new research on more than 47,000 women found that only 8% of them were 70 years old without memory problems, physical restrictions or major diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
Their secret? Eat more carbohydrates.
Women who eat high-quality carbohydrates, starting at the age of 40, are more likely to remain healthy to 70 years, according to a study published on May 16th. Jama Network Open.
Researchers said carbohydrate -rich foods such as beans, berries, greens and oats could play a key role in longevity.
Changing these quality carbohydrates, not particularly processed foods such as French fries and donuts, could improve your health not only for short -term but also for decades.
The study shows that it can even be useful to eat the right type of carbohydrate rather than extra protein.
“We have all heard that different carbohydrates can affect health differently, whether weight, energy or blood sugar,” Andres Ardisson Korat, the main author and researcher from the University of Tuft, said in a press release.
“But instead of just looking at the direct effect of these macronutrients, we wanted to understand what they could mean good for health after 30 years.”
What does this mean to grow old?
Researchers have reviewed women’s nurses, starting with the 40-50s, three decades of further action to compare the eating habits of participants with how their health changed over time.
They examined who had memory problems, whether the disease such as type 2 diabetes up to 70 years developed, but also assessed whether the participants were physically capable and mentally sharp. The definition of their healthy aging was the ability to keep up with everyday tasks such as walking, housework and carrying food, but also a moderately vigorous exercise, such as running, weight lifting or sport.
About a third of women were able to prevent chronic illness for up to 70 years, and about half maintained a good memory, but only about 15% were considered without physical restrictions.
The most elite group of women did all the above, 8% of all participants who were in line with the definition of healthy aging.
Carbohydrates before protein for durability
Researchers found that living more protein for longer is not necessarily better.
Eating 5% more protein rather than carbohydrates reduced the likelihood of healthy aging in the study. Investigators noticed additional carbohydrates.
By changing 5% more carbohydrates than saturated fat or animal protein, you can force you to greet you more, the data model offered.
How to choose the healthiest sources of carbohydrates
Not all carbohydrates were kept in the same study.
Women who ate more carbohydrates from high -fiber food – Vegetables, whole grains, fruits and beans – more prone to healthy agents.
Of course, refined carbohydrates such as added sugar, cakes and pizzas, along with starchy processed foods such as French fries and potato chips, have been associated with lower probabilities of healthy aging. It is largely due to the salt, sugar and excess fat in a processed food that can damage our health if we eat too much.
However, without more research, the study cannot say exactly whether certain foods directly cause the longevity of a lower risk of less illness. It is also limited as it is based on research on what the participants ate that may be unreliable because people rarely have the exact memory of their dishes and snacks.
However, the results help to confirm constant research on the best eating method for a long, healthy life. So far, evidence is stacking those healthy grains, beans and products that are safe.
“The more we can understand about healthy aging, the more science can help people live healthier longer,” said Ardisson Korat.
