What is tuberculosis?

The Mayo Clinic explains that tuberculosis or TB is a serious disease caused by bacteria that mainly affects the lungs. The disease can spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes, pushing small droplets carrying germs into the air where others can be inhaled.

There are three stages of TB infection, each of which can cause different symptoms.

Primary TB infection There is the first stage in which the immune system cells find and capture germs. The immune system can completely destroy germs, but in some cases, the captured germs can still survive and reproduce. Most people do not have symptoms in this phase, but some people may see symptoms of flu such as low fever, fatigue and cough.

Latent TB infection Usually the primary infection is followed. During latent infection, the immune system cells build the wall around the lung tissue with TB germs. There are no symptoms of latent TB infection.

Active TB disease Occurs when the immune system does not control infections that allow germs to cause disease in all lungs or other parts of the body. The active TB may occur immediately after the primary infection, but usually occurs after months or even years of latent TB infection.

What are the symptoms of tuberculosis?

Symptoms of active TB disease in the lungs usually start gradually and deteriorate within weeks. They may include:

  • A blood suit or mucus

  • Pain in breathing or coughing

  • In general, you don’t feel good

If an active TB infection occurs outside the lungs, other symptoms may develop depending on the location of the infection. The usual areas are kidneys, liver, fluids that surround the brain and spinal cord, heart muscles, genitals, lymph nodes, bones and joints, skin, blood vessel walls and voice box.

Some of the possible symptoms listed in Mayo Clinics are:

  • In general, you don’t feel good

  • Pain near the infection site

Symptoms of severe tuberculosis listed in Mayo Clinics:

The dose of the BCG vaccine is used to prevent TB prevention.

Is tuberculosis fatal? The dangers of living?

Tuberculosis is a disease that has a fatal history.

U.S. Disease Control Centers claim that in 1882 TB killed one of the seven people in the US and Europe. The TB, although still a serious illness, is now far from the death penalty, which historically represented the discovery of antibiotics, the overall improvement of public health and other factors.

The Mayo Clinic, however, adds that some forms of TB bacteria have become drug resistant, which means that drugs that once cured the disease are no longer working. Recent NC data showed that in 2023 10 cases of TB resistant to TB were recorded in the state.
