The death of a student at the University of Mississippi has found a university campus, ruled suicide, but the family raises questions

Earlier this week, suicide was decided in the Delta State University town, previously hung in black student, a County Coroner said Thursday.

Demartravion Trey Reed, 21 years old

The incident raised the questions of relatives and encouraged the university’s president to admit that the scene and image may be upset by some students, taking into account the history of racial violence in Jim Crow South.

The entire “active” case investigation material was forwarded to the FBI and the US law firm, according to a press release from the Cleveland Police Department.

“I condemn rumors coming from his death,” Sean Tinder, the Department of Mississippi Social Security, said in a press release.

The authorities had previously said that no foul was suspected at the time of death.

“Based on a preliminary study, we can confirm that the deceased did not do any cracks, bruises, compound fractures, broken bones or injuries corresponding to the assault,” said Randolph Rudy Rudy’s headline in a written report earlier this week.

Peeller added that they look at the visual evidence in the case. “There are videos, and they are in the hands of the research team,” he said.

Family seeks “transparency”

Delta State President Dan Ennis asked for peace because the investigation continues, but said he understood why people want immediate answers.

“We understand that it’s not just about facts,” Ennis said. “It is about emotions, it is about feelings and how this bereavement and how it has been found influenced people’s lives.”

Reed’s family members retained Ben Crump, a civil rights lawyer, announced on Tuesday.

“We cannot agree with uncertain conclusions when so many issues are left,” Crumpo said in a statement. “I stand with this family and lead a team of civic rights leaders and organizations to seek transparency and answers to the Trey family.”

Crump requires all videos related to death test to the family.

In addition, the Crump and Reed family will assign an independent autopsy to “check the conclusions of the state medical expert and ensure that no question will be answered,” the lawyer said on Wednesday.

CNN reached Crump after the results of the autopsy were released.

The Delta state is located in Cleveland, Northwest Mississippi, about 115 miles from Memphis, Tennessee. Last year, its admission was 2,654 students, a university reported, of which almost 43% were black. This school year has not yet been published.

Ever since the news of Reed’s death has been widespread in social media, Ennis said the university town has increased law enforcement in response to threats.

The event celebrating its 100th anniversary was planned on Monday, but was canceled after Reed’s remains were discovered.

The case has a worrying historical context

White Ennis said he understood why Reed’s death circumstances are particularly worrying for many students.

“I admit that I am not enough to talk to the images that this event increases and recognizes my weakness in this regard,” he said.

Family members said on Tuesday that Reed was excited about his future, and they saw no signs that caused concern.

“When he returned to the Delta State University, he was a cheerful person, and our question is what happened?” According to the CNN subsidiary whbq, family lawyer Vanessa J. Jones.

The invitation to carry out a more intense investigation was repeated by a member of the congress representing the district.

“We don’t have to leave any stone that did not appear to find answers,” wrote Bennie Thompson, a Democratic spokeswoman on Tuesday, demanding a federal study.

“Although the details of this case are still rising, we cannot ignore the history of Mississippi painful lynx and racial violence against African -Americans.”

Thompson asks Trump’s administration to open a federal investigation of Reed’s death. The administration confirmed that it had received a request from Thompson, but had not yet responded, Yasmine Brown said Thompson’s secretary.

A decade ago, federal agents investigated the death of a 54 -year -old black man, Otis Byrd, who was hung from wood in Claiborne County, Mississippi. The Department of Justice concluded the case in 2015, finding “there was no evidence to show that Byrd’s death was a murder.”

Reed’s remains were found a few hours before another resident of Mississippi was found hanging more than 100 miles. Cory Zukatis’ body was found in Vicksburg Monday afternoon, Vicksburg Post reports. The death of a 35 -year -old Caucasian man, Zukatis, was not thought to be connected to a reed case, police chief Larry Burns told the newspaper.

Despite the shocking death in Delta and the threats of school reports, Peeller said the university’s campus students were safe.

“This is an individual event,” he said.

The correction: In the previous version of this story, 2024. The total number of students enrolled in the Delta State University was made. It was 2 654
