At least eight people died after the hot air balloon caught fire in the middle of the air, forcing passengers to jump out of the bag to prevent flames.

The fire broke out in Praia Grande in the sky – Brazilian Santa Catarina in the municipality and the popular hot air balloon travel destination – June 21, Saturday morning, according to Jorginh Mello, state governor.

During the incident, there were 21 people in the tourist flight, eight of whom were confirmed by the dead, said Mello X, originally written in Portugal. The other 13 passengers survived, the Santa Catarina Governor added. (Santa Catarina Military Fire Brigade later shared the same event mortality.)

Mello said officials are currently watching the situation.

The audience captured the tragedy in videos taken from several corners. In the footage published by Agora portal, smoke was visible from a hot air balloon and the flame enveloped the bag.

When describing the scene for the local newspaper Jornal Razão, one witness said people jumped off the flame after the ignition of the balloon. Some jumped to pilot orders, the newspaper said.

After the pilot realized that the hot air balloon was burning, he tried to land as soon as possible and told passengers to jump as the aircraft approached the ground, Jornal Razão said.

Some passengers managed to dance and survive, while others did not escape the basket fire, according to the Brazilian newspaper.

According to Jornal Razão, the pilot said the flame was caused by a spare flashlight inside the bag that caused a spontaneous flame.

The pilot told the authorities, the newspaper, that he was not sure if the backup, which is kept in an aircraft, if the main burner breaks down – ignited independently, but he started a fire.

Shortly after the initial report, Mell shared a statement of support for the victims and their families.

In his statement, the Santa Catarina Governor expressed his condolences to those who were affected by the fatal event he described as a tragedy and promised the support of the government’s government.

Brazilian President Louis Inácio Lula da Silva also expressed his support in his statement.

“I would like to express my solidarity with families of the cylinder accident victims, which took place this Saturday morning in Santa Catarina,” the president wrote in a Portuguese -written post.

He continued. “I would like to build a federal government for the transfer of victims and state and municipal forces working for rescue and supervised by survivors.”
