When you hear Toyota or Honda, the first word that often comes to mind is reliability. However, in the latest consumer reports, the other brand took the highest place. While Lexus and Toyota still have the best new new cars and SUVs less than $ 30,000, Subaru has become the most reliable brand in 2025. So what distinguishes Subaru?
Let’s first understand how our friends Consumer Reports conduct their annual survey. The publication asks subscribers about the problems they encountered their vehicles in recent years. Reviews of specific failures, including force gear, suspension, driving, brakes, climate systems, quality of parking and car electronics, were requested. Using more than 300,000 vehicles, this information has been evaluated to determine the potential problems and assign each model to the expected reliability score. Based on these scores, the Consumer Reports provide a total rating of each brand.
Subaru was rated as the best brand with 68 out of 100, followed by a Lexus with 65 and Toyota with 62. All three points are classified as “higher than average” according to user reports. Honda (59) is fourth and the least reliable brands were Cadillac (27) and Rivian (14).

What contributes to Subaru high reliability rating?

The Subaru mentality, which is characterized by conservative transformations, common components and lower model composition, is likely to contribute to its strong reliability. With each transformation, Subaru tends to take a more gradual approach, reducing the implementation of new technologies and engineering, which can cause problems, especially among the first year models. In addition, Subaru maintains a relatively small composition; While Toyota offers more than 20 models in the US, Subaru produces only nine.
In this smaller Consumer Reports, Subaru models have many components, which can further reduce the risk of introducing new problems. For example, all Subaru Impreza, CrossSrek and WRX are all related models. Another example of simplification is its models; Since 2019 The popular Forester offered only one force gear. However, this changes with the new Forester Hybrid.
Because individual model ratings affect the overall brand rating, it is important to emphasize the Forester stars 98 out of 100 reliability rating. Not only does it describe this as a MVP composition, it also makes it one of the most reliable models rated with an almost perfect rating. Impreza also secured a good medium reliability rating by earning an impressive 89 point. Meanwhile, CrossSrek (75), Legacy (66) and Outback (61) all received better than average ratings, and the uplift earned an average of 50. Neither Subaru Brz nor WRX had enough reliability survey data to take into account with other seven models.
Why did some brands have fallen?

We discussed why Subaru did well, but why did Toyota fall into a reliability rating? First, it is important to note that Toyota ranks third, while its Lexus luxury luxury ranks second – both impressive achievements, given that 22 brands have been awarded. By offering twice as many models as Subaru, including a minibus, two pickups, several medium -sized SUVs and a full -size SUV, Toyota’s increased variety of unique models can cause more complexity, which can cause more problems and can affect its overall score.
Most of the Toyota models have received average, higher than average or well -evaluated average reliability. Only three Toyota models were smaller than the average: BZ4X EV (38), Tacoma Medium -sized pickup (29) and Tundra full -size pickup (32). Given that the new Tacoma reportedly experienced the transmission issues in less than 1000 miles and the tundra was part of a huge engine cancellation, it is not surprising that these trucks reduced the overall brand average. If it wasn’t because of these low scores pickups, Toyota could have surpassed Subaru. Meanwhile, Honda’s overall rating is influenced by his Prologue Crossover EV (30/100), which shares many components with Chevrolet Blazer EV. Nevertheless, Toyota and Honda remain among the top four brands.
With a smaller, simpler composition, Subaru this year says it is the highest place of reliability. But Toyota and Honda are close. Although this reliability rating is based on a brand, it is very important to investigate the specific model you are being under consideration, as even the most reliable brands have vehicles that may face problems.
