‘Human error’ by prison officer led to wrongful release of Epping sex offender Hadush Kebatu, Lammy says

Epping sex offender Hadush Kebatu is to be flown to Ethiopia “immediately” following the fiasco over his release from prison.

Justice Secretary David Lammy ordered “tighter checks” on prisons after the mistake over Kebatu’s illegal release.

A cabinet minister told the Commons that Kebatu was released in error due to “human error”.

He said he would be deported to Ethiopia as soon as possible.

Mr Lammy also announced an independent inquiry into the error, which will look into whether prison staff were adequately trained.

Kebatu, an Ethiopian national, was jailed for 12 months in September for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and was illegally released from HMP Chelmsford on Friday morning instead of being sent to an immigration detention centre.

The migrant, who was staying at a hotel in Bell Epping, Essex, when he attacked the girl, traveled from Chelmsford to London and was arrested in Finsbury Park on Sunday morning.

It is understood he will be flown back to Ethiopia “soon”.

The father of Kebatu’s teenage victim said he hoped the sex offender would be “immediately deported” – which the justice secretary said should happen next week when he is questioned by police.

Speaking in the House of Commons about Kebatu’s release, Mr Lammy said: “He’s back where he belongs, behind bars.”

He added: “I can tell Parliament that he will now be deported back to Ethiopia as soon as possible.

“But that doesn’t change the fact that Ms. Kebatu’s victims are rightfully angry about what happened, and I’m angry on their behalf and on behalf of the public.”

“This was a mistake that should not have happened. The victims expect better. The public expect better and this Government expects better from a vital public service that plays a vital role in our first duty to protect the British people from harm.”

The minister explained that “it appears to have been a human error” that led to Kebatu’s release.

But shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick tried to blame the government for the mistake, saying the “Kebatu fiasco” was “Labour’s own fault”.

He criticized the justice secretary as “the wretched Lammy”.

Earlier on Monday, Communities Secretary Steve Reed said he shared the “disappointment and anger” of the girl who was sexually assaulted by Kebatu after he was mistakenly released from prison.

“My jaw was on the floor, like everybody else’s, when I heard it was released the way it was,” he told Times Radio.

“He shouldn’t even be in our country, let alone the actions he’s taken.”

He added: “Now I want to pay tribute to the police who, thank God, caught him very, very quickly and to the public whose vigilance helped point the police to where to identify him.”

“And people should be reassured that he will now be deported this week, but it’s very worrying that this person has been released, apparently by accident, and he’s not the only one, so the Ministry of Justice has ordered a full investigation there.”

“(One) officer has been suspended and David Lammy, who is the justice secretary, will be announcing increased checks in Parliament later today to make sure things like this don’t happen again.

He blamed the mistake on a “broken justice system” which he said was the fault of previous Tory governments.

But Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary who fired Kebat, said he was still “shocked that this inept Labor government let him go in the first place”.

The Conservative MP for Croydon South told GB News: “They should never have let him go and I think David Lammy and Shabana Mahmood have questions to answer because they presided over this system.
