This essay is based on a conversation with the 33 -year -old Shreya Mishra Reddy, Austine -based Visa Technical Program Manager. Business Insider checked Reddy’s employment, immigration status and failed H-1B tests. Next, it was edited due to length and clarity.
I never dreamed of living in the US. I grew up in India and wanted to stay close to my parents.
2021 December I moved to the states to develop a Master’s program in Engineering Management at Duke University. After graduation in 2022, 2023. I got a job at Visa as a technical program manager.
I wanted to continue working and study in the US, but I tried to get a H-1B visa three times and unsuccessfully.
When I read about the Trump administration’s plans to introduce a $ 100,000 tax on employers supporting new H-1B petitions, my situation seemed to deteriorate and deteriorate.
My students’ work permit to recruit the US ends in January. I was planning to return to India and turn to H-1B again, but with a new $ 100,000 fee, there seems to be no hope.

Not to get a H-1B visa in the lottery struck me heavily
Before moving to the United States, I worked for five and a half years at Tata Consultancy Services Bengalu. I was satisfied with my career, but I wanted to supplement my professional profile while studying abroad. I was inspired by colleagues and school friends who moved to Europe and the US, and I was so happy that I was adopted by the Ivy Plus School Duke.

I went to the US for a F-1 student visa. As a STEM student, I could spend an additional three years in the US through an optional practical training that is a kind of work permit.
When 2023 February I joined Visa, the company provided me with documents to get a H-1B visa. Registrators were randomly selected in the lottery system and I was not selected.
Next year I was not lucky, and it caught me pretty much. At that time, I recently graduated from Harvard Business School working at Visa. I was disappointed that despite my professional and academic achievements, I was not elected for the lottery.

2025 April I found out that I was not chosen for the third time. I thought I was mentally prepared to consider leaving the states, but I saw the results.
My three -year -old student work permit ends in 2026. January, so I will probably have to leave the US earlier.
Having a new $ 100,000 h-1B fee, I’m not sure I will be recruited again in the US
I still have to figure out where I go next and what my employment position will look after January.
I was looking for another master’s program in the US. I thought maybe I could go back to India and apply for H-1B jobs there that would allow me to go back to the United States and work while studying.
But only $ 100,000 is more expensive to hire a person like me who applied for a H-1B visa from the US. I believe in my own profile and skill. I know I’m good, but are I so good?
I plan to look at other countries that I can move to, but emigration elsewhere can also be easy.
I will definitely look for work in India where opportunities open. Beginners’ scene is growing, and now that I have experience from Harvard, Duke and Visa, I think I have a much stronger summary that I can take to India or elsewhere.
With my experience, I am sure I will be able to find out something. I am more worried about international students in the US because there is still confusion about whether they may be subject to recent H-1B changes. I care about it will be very difficult to get a H-1B visa if the fee is dropped by the top of the market and replacing workplaces.
Bastalweet to think about leaving the US after contributed 4 years
Nevertheless
I loved my time very much in the US. Whatever the country promised me, it was presented. I was able to contribute so many amazing ways, and most people most people accepted me. I got good quality education studying at the two best universities in the world, and I was able to raise my career to the next level.

The current administration does what she thinks is best for a country with this immigration policy. But coming to the United States becomes a greater excitement. I think it would make sense to learn here only if you are happy to leave after the student’s work permit, if you don’t get H-1B.
I don’t think people should put everything in the line to come to the United States, or put all their eggs in this bag.
I have made a great financial and skill contribution to the US. Together to leave four years later, without seeing the future.
