Menendez Brothers must be evaluated by the “probation Board” to run after 30 years in prison

Los Angeles (AP). The Malendez brothers intend to bring their cases for comparison from Thursday, noting the closest to win freedom from prison from their beliefs because their beliefs for their parents killed.

Erik and Lyle Menendez 1996 Were convicted of life in prison for shooting his father in Jose Menendez and Kitty Menendez in his Beverly Hills Manor in 1989. They were 18 and 21 at the time. Although defense lawyers said the brothers had been behaving from their own father for many years after their father’s sexual abuse, prosecutors said the brothers had killed their parents for a few million dollars.

The brothers became the right to probation after May. The Los Angeles judge reduced punishments from a life prison without parole to 50 years to head, so they can be parole under California laws immediately because they were 26 when they committed their crimes.

The governor’s officers or two or three probation officers will evaluate the brothers separately. Erik Menendez will host his listening Thursday morning and then follow Lyle Menendez on Friday, at a video conference from Richard J. Donovan correctional object in San Diego.

The Board will assess whether the brothers are “unreasonable at the risk of society” if they are released, taking into account factors such as criminal history, crime motivation and compassion, prison behavior and future plans, says California Amendments and Rehabilitation Department.

Even if the Board gives its probation, it can still take months for the brothers to walk freely – if at all. If the Board provides each brother’s probation, the chief legal advisor has a 120 -day review of the case. The Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom must then confirm or deny the probation for 30 days. Only if Newsom confirmed the probation, the Menendez brothers could leave the prison.

Newsom has previously ordered the National Launch Council to carry out a risk assessment of the brothers in response to a claim for shame. At the time, he stressed that the main issue was whether the brothers were “unjustified risk of public security.”

May At the conference, he noted that he had previously confirmed and rejected the decisions of the “probation Board” and that he was a “final referee”.

The lawyer of the brothers, Mark Geragos, sought to release Erik Menendez last month after he was admitted to the hospital for “serious health.” He has since returned to prison.

For decades, the case has drawn the attention of real crime enthusiasts and made documentaries, television special things and dramatization. Netflix Drama Monsters: Lyle and Erik Menendez History and documentary “Brothers Menendez”, both released in 2024, were credited for paying new attention to the brothers.

Last year, celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian and greater recognition of the brothers as victims of sexual abuse, helped to collect the legion sponsors who invited them to release them. Some have flew to Los Angeles in the last few months, organizing rallies and visiting court hearings when the lawyers of the brothers demanded their outrage.

The previous LA County lawyer George Gascón first opened the door to the possible freedom of the brothers last fall asks the judge to reduce their sentences. Since their conviction, the brothers acquired their education, participated in self -help classes and started various support groups in prison colleagues, his office said.

The judge’s decision eventually followed the brothers months of the present prosecutors who said the brothers had not taken proper liability for their crimes.

The Menendez brothers still have a petition for the Habeas Corpus, which was available in 2023. In May, when requested to review their beliefs based on new evidence confirming their father’s claims about sexual abuse. Last month, another judge told Los Angeles to explain why their case should not be re -examined.

The State Correctional Department chose one media representative to review the process in practice and share notes with the rest of the press.
