The commemoration of giant underwater beings usually resembles mythological monsters. The great crackers, the ancient Leviathan, and if the beings with 45 weapons fossil are real life cthulhu. As a society, we admire the big monsters that swim in the ocean mostly unexplored.
The expedition began in 2024. October Solomon islands in northeast of Australia. This extended mission sent a team of scientists and filmmakers that broadened our understanding of island’s local ecosystems and explored their health in this time of climate change. The expedition took place in cooperation with the National Geographic Seas, Ocean12, the Solomon Islands Government and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development of Solomon Islands.
The expedition has discovered what is now considered the largest underwater being. However, it is not as scary as you may think. Instead, it is a beautiful coral called Pavona Clavus. This specific coral is larger and lived longer than the largest animal on Earth.

Pavona Clavus Coral is also known as the shoulder blade coral for its shape and found in Solomon islands for 300 years. Sitting about 42 feet below the ocean surface, coral levels are 112 x 105 feet and are up to 16 feet in height. It is large enough to be visible from space and is the largest coral colony ever found. Scientists estimate that it consists of one billion polyps.
Enric Island is the National Geographic Explorer, as well as the founder of Prismatin SEAS to help protect the oceans around the world. In a statement of coral discovery, the National Geographic Island said: “Having found this mega coral is like a discovery of the highest tree on earth.” He also stated, “This discovery revives our sense of fear and wonders the ocean.”
Despite the concern about climate change affecting the coral, the expedition team was facilitated to find out that this coral was in good health. The local island community has been unofficially taking care of and protected the waters around the islands for more than a decade. We hope that this new exciting discovery will be able to implement official support on a large scale. This would help protect not only this coral from damage, but also the entire surrounding ecosystem. During this ecosystem damage and concern about the sixth mass extinction event, this type of protection is critical.
How this coral is compared to other underwater giants

The coral is larger than the blue whale with an average length of 82 to 105 feet. Blue whales also live up to 90 years, so this coral is much older. The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth, which forms both length and weight. Although fossils may have found a new, largest animal in history, from the discovery of this expedition, this coral occupies the location of the blue whale.
Another underwater giant is the lion me jellyfish. Although its main body is quite small and especially floating, it is 94% water, and its tentacles can grow up to 120 feet long. Although it is longer than the coral, it is not as wide. It also does not reach a 16 -foot height that this coral reaches.
Some other aquatic giants that cannot match coral size are sperm whale 78 feet long, whale shark 61 feet long and rotating shark 40 feet long. This coral is truly massive, crossing a long distance and reaching quite high. For a long life, he saw that the events of decades were coming and leaving. We hope that it will still be with us for a long time.
