The state of Alabama reacts

Quinton T. Ross Jr., President of Alabama State, responded to US news and world reports to the editor. Below is his statement.

Sensational journalism can attract attention, but let’s focus on the facts. Most people have a certain form of debt, both large and small, good or bad. The same goes for students across the country. Almost every higher education institution has graduates who experience debts to achieve their degrees. Student debt is a national problem, so why is Alabama State University with a different student debt in college campus? May be used to press social media. What is the story worth this story? Let me use it as a trained moment:

Alabama State University “leaves” students’ debts and no other university; Debt is due to federal or private loans that students are taking on education due to lack of personal resources. Like most of us when we need a car or home, but I avoided. It is inexpensive that our completion percentage increased by 3%, the rate of default of our student loan has decreased as our students return their loans. Our acceptance continues to grow and our level of maintenance remains strong.

It is difficult for us to understand why these positive changes are not the focus of the story. So, let’s look at the whole photo.

According to the College of Discition, Alabama State University remains one of the most accessible options in Alabama, and annual training is $ 8,328 the lowest among the 14-year-old four universities, according to the Alabama Commission Higher Education Commission. In fact, ASU science, taxes and housing costs are lower than the average of national colleges in the country (Board of the College, College Pricing Trends in 2024).

The report was misinterpreted by the local media not a measure of study level or education quality. Instead, it reflected the financial reality of the students we proudly serve. Many ASU students come from families with limited financial instruments of 72%, household income is less than $ 100,000 and 48% less than $ 60,000. Each year, more than 70% of ASU Bachelor’s Bachelor can receive PELL grants that help to compensate for scientific costs. However, students still have to pay for housing, food, books and other essentials, so many of them can take federal loans, as do students across the country.

The real story is not about debts, it’s about the possibility. Studies show that adults with a high degree earn significantly more than those who have no degrees (the Board of the College, Education pays 2023). ASU deeply believes in promising education to change life and uplifting families. The college should be accessible and accessible to all students, not just those who have all the financial instruments to pay.

Like Hbcu, the University of Alabama is always proud to serve students who are often overlooked or under -represented elsewhere. Our mission is to open the possibilities of opportunities, to move students from low socio -economic status, and to change the trajectory of family to generations and we will never apologize for this commitment.

In order to strengthen this mission, ASU has increased its fund and continues to grow it to provide more institutional scholarships and reduce the need for student loans. At national level, colleges with a larger fund, most of which are not HBCU, can offer more scholarships. Despite this difference, ASU is continuing to expand financial support for its students.

Our efficacy in management of student debts is reflected in the US Department of Education Department of three years of federal student loan cohortes. The default ASU rate has fallen, which is evidenced by our financial literacy programs and loan counseling efforts.

Our goal is to help students continue to gain degrees at Alabama State University. The likelihood of a meaningful career with a vibrant salary that allows them to successfully repay their debts and much more. Through ASU Career Services Bureau Students have access to career counseling, Résumé and interview preparation, internship opportunities, employers’ partnership and career fair to maintain their transition from college to career success.

We invite those who believe in the power of education and historically the mission of black colleges and universities to cooperate with the University of Alabama, growing our grants and expanding scholarships to continue making a college accessible, accessible and life -changing for every student who dreams of a better future.
