We were tired of the suburbs and thought that life in Tulsa in the center would be a great new adventure.
-
So we sold our homes, signed a luxury apartment rental contract and thought everything was going smoothly.
-
The problems began as soon as our belongings were unpacked.
When we and my husband signed our new lease, we were pumped new.
We were in the middle of 20 and ready for a new adventure, but who knew we would get involved in one of the most precious mistakes in our lives?
It all started in April last year when we felt itchy for change. We wanted to stay in the same city because it was close to the family, but our current routine felt baked. We also just encountered long insurance benefits and repair costs due to severe storm damage.
We thought: What if we could sell our startup house to pay our student loans, we would have more disposable income and save for a couple of years of our family dream home, all renting a trendy place near the city center? At the time, it seemed like nonsense.
We found a luxurious apartment complex near the city center
The new complex of luxury apartments seemed to check all the boxes. It was near the bustle of the city center. Although Tulsa is not a big city, it comes and comes and has much attention to valuable food, art and music options, including the highest level of food hall throughout America, called the Mother Road Market, directly across the street from the complex.

We would also be located in the iconic Route 66, where each business boasts a neon sign. There was, of course, a nervous feeling, but we pointed out the opportunity to make a big leap.
When we visited, some amenities were unfinished, but we were told they were going to finish our moving time.
For us, the building felt luxurious; There were many community spaces to make new relationships with people of our age, and the sales process of our home was already smooth. We thought everything went as planned.
So, a month after we closed our homes, we moved.
Warning of Spoiler: It didn’t work as planned
The problems began as soon as our belongings were unpacked. We immediately had a lot of care problems in our apartment, from electricity to WiFi, to stove, to shower.
Hardly any community’s amenities have opened up as promised. It seemed that no one was working properly in the “luxury” complex.
Just a week after the move, we were close to the evening when the frightening fire alarms shook us from the comfort of our bed. We glanced at the hallway and made eye contact with our neighbors through the hall, all of us were considering whether it was a real fire.
Next to our neighbors, wearing pet, alarms exploding in our ears, we stepped into the yard of the apartment to avoid continuous noise. We waited for more than an hour for the alarms to stop – at least that night.
Unfortunately, those alarms caught us in any day and night hours for our entire residency at least once every couple of weeks.
The last straw was the fourth of July
After a merry night with friends, we heard the water dripping in the hallway.
The inhabitants thought the drain was from the rain that day, but it was a completely explosive water pipe that flooded all the units, including ours.
Soon we terminated our lease agreement, fortunately without a fine.

All the challenges to move from a luxury apartment (ironically back to our area), buy new furniture to replace damaged pieces from the flood, and then pay for the deposit and the first month of our new place in our new location cost thousands, which we did not expect to pay.
Saying that we were disappointed after picking up the tenant insurance claim, replacing our belongings just nine months after six months of homeowners’ insurance claims.
We only lived in a “luxury” apartment for only eight weeks, but for transfer, we paid more than $ 5,000 for a hotel stay, food and furniture replacement that we had to wait for the insurance to compensate.
So what did we learn?
We live comfortably for almost a year in our new place. Now that everything has been tidying up, we are joking that the suburbs called us home.
If you are considering a crazy step, I can say from experience that the grass is not always greener. Do your research and make sure you have good insurance.
