You may have noticed them on certain planes, looking at the rear windows-a jagged shotgun of the shark to the back of some airplane engines. Commercial planes outside them are designed for function, not aesthetics, so those shark teeth have to serve for a particular purpose, right? In fact, they do: called the Chevrons engine, they reduce the noise of the jet engine, which can be quite deafening.
And yet, the new Boeing 777X (the alleged Triple Seven Ex “), its largest development project to update the aging 777, does not have Chevrons. Although this technology has been terrifying in the world of aviation a decade or two ago, progress has since continued. In fact, Boeing’s biggest competitor, Airbus, has never used Chevrons. New engine designs have found other ways to reduce noise without flaws that Chevrons has introduced for flights. Trying now, 777X is playing the most bleeding edges in the Boeing series General Electric Ge9x, which broke a new foundation in both materials and structures.

What exactly is the Chevrons engine?

As everyone who has ever been near a jet, the engines are noisy. The physics of that noise is related to the fact that what the engines do is basically sucking a lot of air, burning it (internal combustion), and then shoot that overheated emissions from the other end. In that sense, this is not all that is different from the car – which is also very noisy if it doesn’t have a muffler.
That hot air blows around it around the atmosphere, which is certainly much cooler. It creates all the friction leading to the whirlwind, which in turn makes the signature that yells. The Chevrons engine was developed in a joint project of NASA, Boeing and GE, especially to compress the flabby. So they may look like a child took a couple of craft scissors into the engine, but what they do is disrupting that exhaust to create a smaller whirlpool buffer layer to suppress larger ones. The result is reduced by the noise.
Of course, passengers and their ears are useful, but it is certainly useful, but it is also important for airline business. Cities around the world have strict noise pollution rules, and in accordance with these rules is part of what determines the flight paths. If the plane creates less sound first, new flightways can open.
What is the biggest disadvantage of the Chevrons engine?

As usual in the world of engineering, there are compromises that occur with innovation. Again, the Chevrons basically lowers the swirling of exhaust, making more whirlwinds to surround them and suppress them. But as a matter of physics, at any time, when you create a whirlwind, you pull out energy from the source. In other words, by making more swirls, it reduces the attraction of the engine that is primarily the full point of the engine. It may not look like this, but the drawing of the Chevrons engine is reduced by about half percent. Multiply this from the entire length of the flight, the flight after the flight, and it increases a lot of additional fuel.
However, for a long time, Boeing realized that the economy was still in operation because it could cut a pile of sound insulation in the salon with less noisy engines. This meant that the aircraft was actually much easier than they would have been different, and that weight saving was equivalent to fuel efficiency. That’s why Chevron technology has appeared in Boeing 747-8s, 787 Dreamliners and one of the biggest Boeing headaches, 737 Maxs.
What changed with 777x?

Obviously, if there was a way to reduce engine noise, as well as not reducing attraction, it would be ideal. So when Boeing had General Electric, it is the biggest and best engines in history for its 777X project, which is exactly what they sought to do.
The result is that GE has created a whole new nozzle design and new materials, a composite of a particular type of ceramic matrix, which is essentially so heat resistant that it allows a more compact, mixed exhaust flow. This creates less friction, so first and foremost, less vortexes (unlike Chevrons, which reduce noise by creating even more vortexes). In turn, this means that energy does not disappear; In other words, the traction does not decrease. Therefore, the jet airplane is quieter without losing its power.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Ge9x engine is also a honeycomb architecture. As car mufflers and resonators do, it creates a good old-fashioned acoustic disorder-the waves that cancel each other-reduce the noise more. If Boeing can force them to stop unsuccessful tests, they will be the biggest and most efficient air -specific air -to -air engines, all without blowing their ears.
