Cape Cod family seeking mandatory short -term lease checks after Airbnb’s tragedy

The Cape Cod family forces mandatory inspections of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors after the devastating tragedy in Airbnb in New York.

Shannon Hubbard, 35, and her 1-year-old daughter, Maggie Hubbard, were killed in a fire in that lease in Clinton, New York, last October.

Homeowners Dennis and Meredith Darcy were accused of second -degree murder for the alleged lies on the presence of smoke detectors on the Airbnb list.

Tim Waldron of the Boston 25 News of Orleans told the deaths of his daughter and granddaughter to speak for the safety of other families.

Recently, Waldron has testified about his heartache and urgent care at the meeting of the other State Chamber on the Maggie Hubbard Safety Act.

All short -term rent in the state of Massachusetts should be checked whether the smoke and carbon monoxide detector of the smoke and carbon monoxide should be checked.

“I realized that each of the cities had different laws, so it was a lot of rules,” Waldron said.

Waldron sat down with the Boston 25 news about what would have been his daughter’s 36th birthday.

The Chatham’s original teacher and her daughter died for the baby after having a nice family weekend on a short -term lease.

After Waldron left Sunday afternoon, it took a heartbreak.

That night, Dennis police officer Waldron’s son, Dennis police officer, put a log in a tree stove and then went out in a hot bath with this.

“They were about 20, 30 minutes there, just enjoyed the night while the kids were. After about 20 or 30 minutes, they smelled of smoke,” Waldron said.

Shanon rushed to the room where their baby was asleep and stuck inside.

Her husband and their three -year -old son escaped, but firefighters could not save Sheron and Maggie on time.

Later, fire investigators found that houses did not have a functioning fire alarms, contrary to what Airbnb list said.

“If the smoke detectors had been going out that evening, they would have heard them for 20 or 30 minutes before they smelled the smoke, and that would not be a problem,” he said.

Now, Waldron is determined to reveal what it calls the unregulated system of self -analysis of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in a short -term lease.

He believes that travelers cannot trust what Airbnb and VRBO Listing say because there are no checks to prove it.

“We are talking about what could prevent death,” Waldron explained. “You should have some verification performed by a fire safety person.”

The Orlean State spokesman for Hadley Luddy presented the Maggie Hubbard Lease Safety Act, and Cape Senator Julian Cyra submitted it in the Senate.

“Safety measures are simply not monitored at a level that actually ensures that we can get into buildings or rental situations and know that we are safe,” said a spokesman Luddy with the 4th Barnstable area.

Rep. Luddy district stretches from Harwich to Provincetown, where the number of short -term rental fees has increased in recent years by thousands.

She said a large part of them is not registered in cities.

“We do not want to see any more unnecessary deaths, such as two life lost here,” the legislature said for the first time. “If I could know that there will be more such avoidance in the future, it would mean a lot to me personally.”

Rep. Luddy cooperates with fire and city governors on Cape Green to determine who will carry out these inspections.

She told the Boston 25 News that it can vary in every community and will probably cover the fee for those who list the short -term rent.

The State Firefighter’s Marshal Service issued this statement to the Boston 25 News, with the law:

“The alarms of the working smoke and carbon monoxide have prevented many tragedy Massachusetts and worldwide. They are vital life safety measures and should be mounted at every level of each living,

“It reminds them that you need to take steps to make you a point, so that I will go beyond your T to make sure that the home you rent to people is as safe,” Waldron said.

Waldron said the law also meant that his daughter’s legacy and granddaughter’s name lives forever protecting others.

“My granddaughter was perfect, right? She had a beautiful smile. She had the best creek. If you saw or heard any of them, you would never forget it,” he added. “It’s a loss I carry with me every day.”

Boston 25 News contacted Airbnb and VRBO to comment and did not hear.

Airbnb’s rental owners did not admit guilty of second -degree murders.
