Regularly brush, thread and visit to the dentist – we all know good dental hygiene poles. But there are two different things to know and maintain them. According to centers of disease control and prevention, nearly 50% of people over 30 have signs of gum disease, while 26% of adults have untreated cavities.
There are often problems with your teeth or gums, and dentists say that certain lifestyle factors may arise from some health problems in your mouth. In fact, normal behavior can deny the benefits of good oral hygiene – and you are probably guilty of some of them.
Below we talked to dentists about dental damage habits and behaviors that they advise and never, never, would never do ourselves:
1. They do not chew the ice.

“The first thing that came to my mind was to chew ice,” said Dr. Natalie Peterson.
“Many people don’t think about it, but they are chewing on the ice drink and they just don’t think about the damage she can do,” she said.
Ice can break your teeth because not only is it difficult but also cold, Peterson noted. This can be particularly harmful to people with filler. “The idea of chewing on the ice just gives me a shaking,” she said.
2. They’re not slicing nail.

According to dr. Jennifer Soncini, Associate Professor, Clinical Associate Professor at Boston University, nail bite can cause tooth problems. Also, nail chewing is often a habit, which means that your teeth have to deal with this action more than once.
When you bite your nails, you wear the enamel on the edges of your teeth, explained Soncini. Enamel plays many important roles – it helps protect your teeth from cavities, erosion, infection and sensitivity to cold, hot or sweet food.
3. They do not open the teeth of bags or bottles.

Using teeth to open a bag of chips or bottle water may seem harmless, but dentists say that is not the case.
“The teeth are strong and very durable, but they are not designed to open the tops of the bottles, to tear packaging or chew hard items,” Huffpost e -mail. By email, dr. Jarrett Manning, a comprehensive cosmetics and implant dentist and JLM dental studies in Georgia.
This causes unnecessary stress to your teeth. “This way, your teeth can cause pain, broken or broken teeth, root canals or even teeth that need to be extracted,” he added.
4. They avoid eating rubber candy.

Stalking candy, such as rubber worms, rubber bears and peach rings, are all things that dentists avoid. Why? They can get stuck in the grooves of your teeth and between the teeth that can cause cavities, Soncini said. They can also jump out the filling.
In addition to gummy candy, Peterson said she specifically avoids sour Rubber.
“I think about it as a bad trump. They are sticky, they are particularly sweet and are really acidic – that’s why they taste acid,” Peterson said.
5. They do not consume too much alcohol.

It is well known that drinking too much alcohol is not good for your liver health, cancer risk or sleep quality. Manning said that excessive alcohol consumption is also damaging to your teeth.
“Alcohol leads to dry mouth and reduces saliva production, and the role of saliva is to help clean your mouth, protect your teeth and neutralize acids, and your saliva may increase your risk of getting cavities,” said Manning.
6. They do not use a toothbrush with too heavy bristles.

Peterson said she recommends toothbrushes with soft bristles for several reasons.
Hard and medium-edge toothbrushes “can be really faint for your gums, making them more recession, and it is difficult to correct the recession when it happens,” she explained. In addition, toothbrushes with hard or medium bristles can generally be sanded for your teeth, she said.
7. They don’t smoke.

“I would never smoke or use tobacco,” said Manning. “Smoking can not only cause serious health problems, but can also cause serious oral health problems, tooth discoloration and extreme oral cancer.”
Smoking is a difficult habit of quitting, but there are resources that will help you achieve this goal. If you do not smoke, do not start your mouth health and beyond.
8. They do not miss daily dental hygiene.

This is probably not surprising, but dentists say that skipping cleaning and thread is the main “no”.
“Every day, the thread along with the brush is the key to the fight against gum disease,” said Manning.
In addition, Soncini said it was very important to brush your teeth at night.
“Never, never, never sleep without causing your teeth,” Soncini explained. “You can spend the whole day without brushes, but if you don’t bake before you go to bed, that’s the worst you can do in your mouth.”
Soncini said that when you go to bed with a clean mouth, bacteria can grow overnight.
9. They do not miss dental appointments.

“I would never ignore my normal dental checks,” said Manning. “Conventional dental checks are very important for maintaining oral health and early catching dental problems.”
When it comes to how often you should visit the dentist to perform regular checks, it depends on your personal dental history and other questions.
“Regular patients should be adapted to each patient and their risk factors and overall dental health,” Peterson said.
“Some people may have to come only once a year, they can be quite healthy; a lot of people, twice a year is a good idea; and for some people with risk factors or dental problems, they may have to come in three or four times a year,” Peterson continued.
