Two men in the Indonesian conservative province of Aceh were among a group of people who were publicly caught on Tuesday after the Islamic Sharia court convicted them for violating Islamic laws by hugging and kissing the court, which the court adopted, could cause prohibited sexual relations.

Aceh is the only province of Indonesia practicing Sharia laws. Rahmawati argued that the change in political dynamics was influenced by the implementation of politics.
“Because it seemed to be the right thing, it had to be done, it had to be told to support the Sharia government Aceh,” said Rahmawati.
The Amnesty International Tuesday announced a statement depicting the act of two men, “an act of disturbing state sanctioned discrimination and cruelty.”
“This punishment is a terrible reminder of institutionalized stigma and abuse faced by LGBTQ+ persons Aceh. Intimate relationships between adults should never be criminalized,” Montse Ferrer, Director of Regional Research, said in a statement.
Banda Aceho, a resident of Aulia Saputra, who has participated in Caning, said the punishment could prevent other violations of Sharia law.
“I hope that this punishment can be a lesson in the offender and also create a deterrent effect to prevent such incidents from happening in the future,” Saputra said.
