We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed community to tell us how they’ve noticed that the people around them have become more conservative in recent years. Here’s what they said:
Note that some submissions come from this Reddit thread.
1. “My dad used to watch various news channels growing up, and although he was always a Republican, he never felt the need to vote or discuss politics. At the time, he was horrified by the January 6th insurrection. Ever since he switched to Fox News and didn’t trust any other news source, he went down the rabbit hole. He was even able to vote for the current president. He, his father, and my brother are now fans of the president and it’s really hard to watch, i don’t think he cares about january 6th let alone politics.

3. “I am me. I’ve become more conservative in recent years. It’s been gradual, but the main reasons have been living in a liberal state, California, that has treated COVID precautions like a religion, even until 2022, forcing them to accept any pro-trans narrative and the way liberals talk about conservatives with disdain and refusal to understand their point of view. Over time, we became conservative friends. disappointed, but not you can please everyone.”

4. “A family member of mine who used to be more liberal now feels that the rampant sexism in STEM is nothing to be upset about. She is a woman in STEM. It’s wild how someone can convince Fox News that their own experiences are untrue while completely rejecting the evidence of their own eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

5. “My 52-year-old son, who has never voted, lives in Lake of the Ozarks and has become a staunch supporter of the current president and ICE. We both watched the video of Renee Good’s murder. I see ICE officers escalating an easy problem that ended in unnecessary use of force and a murder. Taught never to step in front of or behind a vehicle and always look for a way to defuse the situation. He sees no unnecessary use of force by any of the ICE agents.

6. “Wow. I never thought I’d say this, but my wife has shocked me for the past couple of years. She taught in Title I schools for a long time and was very burned out fighting for resources that were never enough, so I understand that burnout can get to a person. She’s still extremely liberal in her views on supporting women and LGBTQ communities. Horrible assumptions about people of color Because I have family that is POC, a has always been important to me, I understand that I am very much on board with racial injustice, but I was surprised at how often I had to call her and remind her that cultural differences are not synonymous with differences in human worth.

7. “My brother fell into the alt-right pipeline during COVID. He had always considered himself middle of the road until he started listening to Joe Rogan. Suddenly he stopped believing in vaccinations and thought the current president was a genius. Now he’s an Andrew Tate fan, eats a carnivorous diet, believes women are subservient to any man, and doesn’t think ‘white’ is substandard.”

8. “I’ve noticed that people seem more willing to speak honestly about their opinions without as much fear of being written off, myself included. Before, I would just agree with whatever was the new hot social justice topic because I was afraid of being bullied or ostracized. Now I feel like I can be a little more honest and have a conversation.”

9. “My American friend, who I’ve known for almost 30 years, has become a supporter of our current president. He’s always been a live-and-let-live kind of guy, but he’s become incredibly strident in his views, especially on women’s rights, trans people, and even black people. It’s like he’s finally realized that with this president, there’s nothing left to say that has no repercussions. Politics.”

10. “I’ve become more conservative myself. I’m tired of the politeness we all have to pretend we have; otherwise, you’re not a ‘good person.’ People are fed up with immigration. There is too much division in the world and people are not happy about it.”

11. “I was raised liberal and I was super liberal until COVID. That changed everything, including seeing how my fellow liberals behave when you have a different opinion. Now, I’m an even more right-leaning libertarian. I’ll never go back. That said, both sides are full of it, they certainly don’t have the public’s best interest in mind, and they’re corrupt.”

12. And finally, “My brother, who is five years younger than me, has never talked about anything political in our entire lives. I don’t want to say anything, and the guy talks a lot. He, my dad, and I went to lunch a month after the last election, and all of a sudden he couldn’t talk about anything but political issues. about your gender identity, wash your hands. My brother said, ‘Jesus, this is one of those places,'” followed by other feelings anti-trans. My father and I were horrified. We tried to understand where this hatred was coming from, but my brother couldn’t stop throwing out conservative talking points long enough for us to have a rational, meaningful conversation.”
“He made anti-trans comments about my son’s non-binary partner and made racist remarks like he was auditioning for Fox News.. My dad made half of the salad before he got up and left without a word. I left a minute later. My dad’s theory was that my brother’s behavior was the result of being in a sibling bubble at his new construction job, but that anger takes more than two months to incubate. For weeks after that lunch, he sent me vile anti-trans, anti-women, and anti-vax videos every day. I finally texted him back and told him that our relationship was unsalvageable and blocked him. I have no idea who that person is and it terrifies me and breaks my heart.”
