The meeting with the Vatican diplomatic body is a standard protocol after the new Pope’s election and allows him to congratulate the world’s governments before Sunday’s official Mass. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubis and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy together with many other world leaders will participate in Mass, the Vatican said.
Pope Leo, emphasizing the dignity of immigrants, noted that his own family immigrated to the United States. His remarks can lead to friction with President Donald Trump, who seeks to deport millions of illegal immigrants from the US, and Pope Francis also publicly encountered immigration.

“My own story is a citizen, offspring of immigrants, who in turn chose to emigrate,” Pope Leo told the Vatican ambassadors.
