Two rivalry games take center stage on Section VII high school diamonds

Section VII high school baseball and softball on Thursday, April 25 featured two rivalries. The classic Clinton County rivalry between Beekmantown High School and Peru High School met on the baseball diamond. Although Peru started the season 5-0, it was Beekmantown that took control from the start, securing a 12-3 victory at home. “It’s a great win,” Beekmantown starting pitcher Patrick Hagadorn said. “Props to them. They’re a great team, but it’s just nice to go out and beat them; it’s an amazing win for us and we’re really excited.” The Eagles scored runs in every inning except the second and fifth innings. The biggest blow of the afternoon came in the third inning when Zach Lapierre hit a three-run home run. Parker Broughton was also a key contributor in the bullpen, going 2 for 3 and crossing home plate for three runs as well. Hagadorn says the hot start with the bats against Peru has been the key to their consistent scoring runs. “We always say start out hot,” Hagadorn said. “Once somebody gets a hit, it all starts building together, we get a great rally almost every time.” Hagadorn was also the winning pitcher in the win for Beekmantown, striking out four batters allowing two hits and two runs in five innings of work. Work on both sides of the ball helped Beekmantown to its third straight win. Meanwhile, in softball, the newly formed rivalry between Saranac High School and Northeastern Clinton Central High School took center stage in the round robin. Saranac, which entered this contest undefeated at 5-0, took care of business at home with a 12-1 victory. Abigail Owen turned in a strong performance on the mound, striking out eight batters in seven innings of work. The Spartan offense was led by Maddie Ganier, going 3 for 4 with a stolen base and an RBI. The Cougars’ only run was driven in by Lexi Roberts, doing so on an RBI infield single.
