The South Dakota Game, Pisces and Parks Department confirmed two Black Bear’s observations near the popular recreational area in mid -June and caused concern among residents.
What happened?
As the Keloland News reported, the teddy bears were spotted wandering along the shores of Lake Pelikan near Watertown, about an hour and a half to the north of the Sioux Falls. The video shared by David Dalke showed that one of the bears was dangerously approaching his dog, but he said the bear looked just curious, not threatening.
Nevertheless, it was a worrying situation, given that the bears weigh hundreds of pounds and can easily hurt or kill smaller animals. Fortunately, both animals left unaccompanied.
The bear was again spotted further down the lake, at the end of the dock, where the locals fished. Fortunately, passed by and noted the bear before he had the opportunity to do any damage.
“He really saw us,” Alexis Rowland told Keloland News. “We didn’t know what to do.”
Shortly afterwards, the bear withdrew. However, the group was shocked and shocked by seeing a bear by the lake, as the black bear’s observations in the area are rare.

“I have never heard of a bear here in 40 years,” said Keith Pietz, a resident of Watertown, through Keloland News.
Why are the South Dakota black bears?
Although black bears are not considered very dangerous to humans, they are still wild animals and can work unpredictably, especially when protecting food or chicks. And if people feed them intentionally or unintentionally, they can be used to looking for food near people’s habitats and endangering both humans and pets.
When bears and other wild animals become conditioned for human food, it can force officials to eradicate them, which, unfortunately, is more common with increasing human and outdoor life conflicts.
The growth of population, destruction of habitats and lack of resources due to the changing climate for animals made it difficult for animals, so they were looking for a city environment for resources.
Residents around the world have reported the observation of bearings in residence, including people’s driveways, gas station parking lots and campsites. When people continue to attack the Bears area, it makes more pressure on animals and restricts their food accessibility.
In this case, the bear does not seem to be looking for food, but the fact that he did not seem too impressed by people.
Fortunately, Black Bears South Dakota is still quite unusual, says Nick Rossman, the wildlife manager of the South Dakota GFP region.
“Black bears in our area are not common in the northeast southern dakota, but sometimes we saw like similar bears of minors wandered around the area,” he explained to the Watertown Radio Station Kxlg.
How can you protect the bears too?
The GFP recommends keeping pets and children under the supervision when the bears are mentioned nearby and clean any food left.
However, in a broader context, measures to preserve Bears would be useful for both wildlife and humans, as conflicts would probably be significantly reduced. Bears in natural habitats are very important for maintaining healthy ecosystems as they regulate the populations of other animals and contribute to the overall biodiversity.
Participation in community protection programs can help ensure that bears have a safe and healthy environment, thus reducing their chances of entering the human territory.
