NFL draft betting: Maye or McCarthy for Giants?

No shock, but as we inch closer and closer to Commissioner Roger Goodell’s first embrace of the 2024 NFL Draft, rumors are swirling about the consensus Top Four quarterbacks — Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, Drake May and JJ McCarthy – and the thought that they would be drafted with the Top 4 picks in the draft.

We know Chicago is holding firm with the first pick and will select USC’s Caleb Williams (-20,000). No drama there. NBC Sports’ Chris Sims is confident Daniels (-185) will go second overall. That leaves May and McCarthy.

It’s not a given that New England will take a quarterback, but the prevailing thought is that a quarterback will go third overall. Arizona and the Los Angeles Chargers seem happy with their current signal-callers, and so both are open to getting back into the draft for right back. The buzz around the Giants lately is that they are interested in entering the QB lottery. What is their appetite to move up? What is their appetite to take a quarterback even if one of those four falls to them at pick #6?

The quarterback buzz is getting louder, according to Rodgers, but he doesn’t entirely buy into the notion that New York is moving on Daniel Jones.

“I’m a little more ripped now than I was before. I never believed that this staff and regime was somewhat like Daniel Jones and so was the ownership. Daniel Jones has always been loved by the ownership, and if you know anything about the New York Giants, the ownership is very involved in the football aspect of the team… There are definitely vocal opinions (among the owners) and I think they didn’t want to see Daniel Jones go . I don’t think the staff and the regime stepped back and said there’s no way we’re going to pay Daniel Jones, but I just don’t think they were that excited about it. There is a reason the two years were guaranteed and not more than two years.

Connor explained further.

“After this year, Daniel Jones’ contract has a big problem. So when you think about it that way, the Giants (coaching staff and front office) have to ask themselves, “First, where is our job security?” I don’t think things are hot for the front office and coaching staff. I also don’t think things are great because there’s just no way to talk about them if they have another bad season. So you have to ask yourself, “Are we going to be this bad again next year?” We shouldn’t, right? I think they are a well coached team. I think they lack talent right now. They have the opportunity to get more talents. So does that make you look at it and say, “Well, we’ve got to go get our quarterback now, because we might never get to do that while we’re here and we’re going to blink, and we’re fired, and we never got our person’. This is a real fear in organizations with regimes. So, I think the Giants short, they could have a quarterback, and I always look at Drake May’s traits and I think that’s the guy that Brian Daboll would want to coach.”

Is New England’s No. 3 pick really in play then for the Giants?

“It’s not that big of a jump that it’s going to cost you three first-round picks. But overall, I’ve felt for a long time that the Giants are probably looking at him and saying, ‘We’re at six. It is unlikely that we will be able to get our man. If we can, maybe we’ll answer the phone, but in the six we really need a number one wide receiver and Malik Nabors will probably be there in the six. There’s a good chance he’s there. He is perfect for them. So, on to the giants. I would go with playmaker, I think it’s pretty tight, but I just think they’re in a weird place right now where I don’t know if everybody’s exactly on the same page about where this state of the franchise is and who’s at high level Daniel Jones is back next year and who isn’t.”

Jay Croucher bowed out to the Giants’ talking heads, summing up their dilemma pretty well.

“It’s kind of a terribly constructed team right now where the strength of their team is basically the interior defensive line and linebacker. You prefer those strengths to be quarterback, receiver, corner, and all those spots are kind of lacking.”
