12 hotels to blow away

12 hotels to blow away

The hotels below are part of the selection of hotels in the MICHELIN Guide. Each of the 5,000+ hotels in the selection has been chosen by our experts for its exceptional style, service and personality — and each can be booked on the MICHELIN Guide website and app.

If you’re a traveler who likes to move, the hotels below are your dream come true. Not only are they located in places where activities like heli-skiing or bungee jumping are part of the course (and yes, some of them have golf courses), they’re places that facilitate those same adventures.

A lap pool is the least of the amenities you’ll find on this list. Swimming and snorkeling, kite surfing and archery – at one hotel you actually arrive wet on an inflatable raft.

We’ll show you luxury soaking tubs at a later date. Today it’s all about blowing out. Each of the twelve hotels below provides a base for some of the world’s best adventure travel.

Blanket Bay

Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand

Adventure tourism doesn’t get much more adventurous than in New Zealand, especially in Queenstown, the country’s adrenaline capital. About an hour outside the city is Blanket Bay, and we can assure you that it is suitable. It’s all here: heli-skiing, heli-fishing, rafting, jet skiing, bungee jumping or just a relaxed 4-day trek in The Mount Aspiring or Fiordland National Parks.

Mountain paradise

Kohala Coast, HI, USA

Boutique hotel junkies, it’s time to embrace the benefits of large-scale hospitality, especially if you want to stay active. At Mauna Lani Bay, you’ll have access to no less than three golf courses, as well as a spa, fitness center, 25-meter lap pool, tennis club and endless water sports from stand-up paddleboards to sailing, diving and snorkeling.

Martinhal Sagres Family Resort

Sagres, Portugal

And now something for the children. All four pools at Martinhall welcome pint-sized swimmers, with bags at the pool when it’s time to get out of the water. The resort has a huge list of recreational activities on offer, both on land and in the sea, and almost everything that is available for adults is also available for children. Finally, play areas beckon after meals, conveniently located near the three restaurants.

Mama Tressel

Leogang, Austria

Mama Thresl’s motto is “city soul meets the Alps”, but it can also just be “get outside and play”. The facilities in and around the hotel go beyond wellness into extreme sports territory. There’s a ski area and bike park, as well as rafting, archery, the extravagantly named Flying Fox XXL Mega Zipline, and something the kids call geocaching. Plus, you can rent a GoPro to record it all for later.

Pacuare Lodge

Turialba, Costa Rica

Due to its remote location, the check-in process at Pacuare is a little different. You will arrive in an inflatable raft, wet and triumphant after an exciting journey through the jungle. It’s a spectacular introduction to the lush tropical landscape of central Costa Rica and a fitting hint of the drama that awaits you during your stay in this lo-fi paradise.

Boro

Arezzo, Italy

Il Borro is one of the most dynamic hotels in the world. This agricultural estate covers 2,000 acres and along with animals, olive groves, vineyards and wine cellars, there are horse trails, tennis courts, a soccer field, a golf course and opportunities to work alongside local artisans creating your own hand-made items. Did we mention there’s also an entire restored medieval village?

Machrie Hotel & Golf Links

Port Ellen, Scotland, UK

Never let anyone tell you that golf is not a physically demanding activity. In Scotland, where you can’t find a golf cart at all, it certainly is. Your typical over-maintained golf resort gives the sport a bad name – but at Machrie, on the Isle of Islay, you can get back to the game’s roots and play it the way it was meant to be played: man against nature and the elements, over the rough and falling ground, all on foot.

Campo Bahia

Santo Andre, Brazil

Campo Bahia is famous for hosting the German men’s national team, who won the World Cup in 2014. They trained and recovered here during that year’s games, so it’s no surprise that there’s an emphasis on sport and fitness, from yoga and gym on the beach to stand up paddle boarding, kite surfing, cycling and professional quality tennis courts. If it’s good enough for the Mannschaft, it’s good enough for you.

How much

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

You’re in Jackson Hole, so you’ll be taking advantage of some of the best skiing in North America. You’re also close to the amazing scenery of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, so that helps. And you’re at an Aman hotel, so the excursions on offer are guaranteed to go above and beyond, from heli-skiing and dog sledding to white-water rafting and photography tours.

Nye Pallad Hideaway

General Luna, Philippines

Nay Palad Hideaway may have taken inspiration from the concept hotel we mentioned in the intro. Sports are strongly encouraged throughout the resort, with a variety of equipment to use. There’s also a games pavilion where you’ll find less athletic pastimes like jigs, pool and board games. The requisite water sports are always an option, as are cooking lessons in the huge open kitchen.

Riverside Boutique Resort

Vang Vieng, Laos

Riverside offers many of the activities mentioned elsewhere on this list, such as tubing, caving, off-road trike riding, and even hot air ballooning. But what really stands out is its dedication to activities that teach guests about Lao culture. When you’re done rock climbing, take a village tour in Vang Vieng and learn about the cultural differences between the many ethnic groups that call Laos home.

Six Senses Zighy Bay

Musandam Peninsula, Oman

Zighy Bay, at the northern tip of Oman, just across the peninsula from Dubai, is the kind of idyll between desert and sea that the Middle East should really be known for. And Six Senses gives you a variety of ways to explore it, whether it’s paragliding, rock climbing, speedboating, snorkeling or 4×4 off-roading. A traditional Bedouin dinner is also a pretty good adventure.
