Discover the science behind the April 8 eclipse at JMRL’s Northside Library

Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Branches will offer the following events next week:

10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Gordon Avenue Library: Storytime with Charlottesville Ballet offers children ages 2 to 8 and their caregivers time to enjoy an interactive dance class and story time with professional dancers. Registration is required.

  • 10:30 a.m. Thursdays at the Greene County Library: Indoor storytime for children ages 1 and 2 with accompanying parents or caregivers builds literacy skills with stories, songs and movement. It will be followed by a short social game with toys provided by the Friends of the Greene County Library. Siblings are welcome.
  • 3.30pm Thursdays at the Central Library: Tinkering with Tech, for ages 9 to 11, is a hands-on exploration that will include building with Cubelet robot blocks and mastering a robotic obstacle course.
  • 4:30 pm Thursdays at the Louisa County Library: The Writing Group is an informal gathering on the fourth Thursday of the month that includes reading, writing, sharing, writing games, and discussions about habits and strategies.
  • 5 p.m. Thursdays at Central Library: Homework help for ages 11 to 18 features volunteers from the University of Virginia’s Madison House. There will also be snacks.
  • 1 to 5 p.m. Fridays at the Louisa County Library: AARP Tax-Aide offers free tax preparation by appointment only for people of all ages, especially those over 50 who can’t afford a preparation of taxes paid. Make appointments at taxaidecville.wordpress.com.
  • 2:00pm Fridays at Crozet Library: Legos in the Library is for 5-11 year olds. The library will provide the Lego bricks. Registration is required.

  • 3:15pm Fridays at the Gordon Avenue Library: Ballet and books for 6-9 year olds registration required. UVa students lead the dance and dialogue reading training program.
  • 2:00 pm Saturday at the Gordon Avenue Library: All-Girls STEM: Engineering Structure Design is for third through fifth grade students of all genders. UVa students will lead STEM activities in science, math, physics, technology, DNA and engineering. Registration is required.
  • 3:30pm Saturday at Northside Library: Teen Read-In in the Northside Teen Room offers free copies of We Deserve Monuments by Jas Hammonds. Registration is not required, but books are limited, so call (434) 973-7893, Ext. 7430.
  • The Central Library will be closed on Easter Sunday.
  • 1 to 6 p.m. Mondays at the Louisa County Library: Register in advance at www.redcross.org or call (800) RED-CROSS.

  • 7 p.m. Tuesday at Northside Library: “Eclipse Chasers: Discovering the Science Behind the April 8 Solar Eclipse” for ages 8 to adult, features NASA Eclipse Ambassador Claire Thielenius leading a presentation that will include a hands-on demonstration of the moon phases and eclipse modeling. Registration is required. A limited number of eclipse glasses will be given away to people who register and attend. Register at www.jmrl.org or call (434) 973-7893, Ext. 4.
  • The Central Library also began offering three hours of free parking in the Water Street or Market Street garages. The first class is free for all, but library patrons with validated tickets will receive three free classes, courtesy of the Friends of JMRL.
