Huawei held a global edition focusing on the top 10 FusionSolar trends for 2024. The theme was “Continuous innovation, high-quality development, accelerating PV to become a mainstream energy source.” At the event, Hao Yingtao, Vice President and CMO of Smart PV & ESS Business at Huawei Digital Power, comprehensively analyzes future trends. The analysis focuses on one major trend, five key features and four core technologies, providing invaluable insight into the high-quality development of the photovoltaic industry. His presentation ended with the release of the white paper.
Hao Yingtao pointed out that carbon neutrality is gaining momentum globally and the photovoltaic and energy storage industry is booming. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), installed photovoltaic capacity is expected to reach 5,200 GW by 2030 and 14,000 GW by 2050, with renewable energy accounting for over 90% of total power capacity and photovoltaics to play a dominant role. As renewable energy, especially PV, continues to enter the market, the industry faces significant challenges in terms of grid connection, operation, safety, etc. Opportunities and challenges always exist simultaneously. Huawei is pleased to share the top 10 trends for high-quality photovoltaic development.
Trend 1: PV & ESS are becoming stable power
As PV & ESS prices continue to decrease and new technologies increase, the PV & ESS system has now become a stable power and will be the main power in the next three years.
Trend 2: Managing tens of millions of power plants
The number of power plants is increasing exponentially and efficient and intelligent planning of electricity generation, transmission, distribution and consumption will become a key requirement.
Trend 3: Intelligence throughout the life cycle
The management of the power plant is moving from maintenance to operation. Smart technology will greatly enhance the benefits of planning, construction, maintenance and operation.
Trend 4: Networking in all scenarios
Grid Forming technology has been successfully applied in some commercial scenarios. It will quickly be extended to all scenarios in the future, which could improve the grid and promote large-scale renewable energy supply.
Trend 5: Four-Dimensional Security
Safety requirements have evolved from simple equipment safety to four-dimensional holistic safety to ensure the long-term reliability of the new energy system.
Trend 6: Cell-to-Network ESS Security
The large-scale application of BESS and the upgrading of safety standards require an energy storage system to realize the safety capability from the cell level to the grid level.
Trend 7: MLPE & CLPE
The need for advanced control is driving the large-scale commercialization of module-level power electronics (MLPE) and further influencing the energy storage industry, leading to cell-level power electronics (CLPE). MLPE and CLPE have become new requirements for distributed PV installations.
Trend 8: High voltage and reliability
High voltage reduces the LCOE of the PV and ESS system, and high reliability improves high availability and achieves maximum security.
Trend 9: High frequency high energy density
The energy density of inverters continues to improve through the application of third generation semiconductors and digital technologies.
Trend 10: High energy quality
Encouraging the large-scale application of PV and ESS throughout the industry by continuously improving power quality.
