You’d be disgusted by the amount of luggage I’ve tested as a former travel editor.

Hear me out: If I hadn’t, some readers would still be at a loss as to what luggage to buy. I certainly would be. And I thought I had it dialed in – I’d tested everything from the Away to the TravelPro and even the ultra-luxe Rimowa (previously my favourite). So I had to test it. Before I dive into my review, I’m excited to share that Carl Friedrik’s The Check-In Suitcase and Palissy Weekend Bag passed with flying colors.

A few weeks ago I was on a trip to the province of Montana. Now, this was not your typical walk. Think flight changes, turbulent skies, and the TSA rummaging through my belongings—all while battling the elements of Mother Nature herself. I won’t lie; I almost felt guilty for subjecting this pristine piece of luggage to such harsh conditions. But duty called, and callously I obeyed. I even felt bad for my weekend Palissy as I am as clumsy as they come so the same conditions continued to apply even though I carried it on board.

But let me tell you, my trip with Carl Friedrich luggage was nothing short of eye-opening. As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of all things travel gear, I pride myself on testing the nooks and crannies of the industry’s heavy hitters. Yet stumbling across Carl Friedrich felt like discovering a hidden gem in a sea of ​​familiar names.

• Check-In, with its elegant demeanor and robust construction, met the challenges head on. Its polycarbonate shell repels both raindrops and snowflakes as its wheels glide effortlessly across the airport floor.

What really impressed me, though, were the thoughtful details: the TSA-approved lock ensures my belongings are secure, and the expandable compartment offers unexpected space for souvenirs. Plus, the internal compression system keeps everything in place, no matter how tough the ride.

By the way, this is a suitcase without a zipper, and it’s my first time carrying such luggage. I’d rather not go back. Two (anything but simple) latches close and strengthen the suitcase, making opening easier, crowded luggage more secure, and replacements or repairs become further and less intermediate.

• As for the Palissy Weekend bag, it has been my faithful sidekick through it all. Despite my tendency towards clumsiness, its leather exterior remained flawless, a testament to the craftsmanship. And inside, a sanctuary of organization awaited me, with designated compartments for everything I needed.

In the end, Carl Friedrich’s luggage proved its mettle. It’s not just about looking good (although they certainly do); It’s about standing up in the chaos of travel. So, to fellow adventurers looking for the perfect travel companion, heed my words: Carl Friedrich is a name to remember. Your future expeditions will thank you.
