ID.me and OtisHealth introduce a patient app that revolutionizes access to personal health information

Patients can now seamlessly and securely request access and share their health records with one click.

WASHINGTON, January 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — ID.me, the market-leading secure digital identity network, has joined forces with OtisHealth, a leading health technology player, and two TEFCA-qualified healthcare information networks to revolutionize the way people have access and management of their health information. The partnership demonstrates a first-ever successful patient health record request that puts consumers at the center of their healthcare journey.

The app allows users to securely log into the OtisHealth app by verifying their identity with ID.me and consenting to access to their clinical records. Through a single request, known as Individual Access Services (IAS), people can seamlessly retrieve, review and share their health records across all providers. Giving patients direct access to their own health data through secure digital authentication and data exchange is an important milestone in healthcare.

The Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) is a framework for patient-centered access to health data established by the 21st Century Cures Act. ID.me, in a long-standing partnership with OtisHealth, is distinguished by being the first identity service provider to implement the TEFCA framework, giving patients democratic access to their health data. Once a patient logs into the app, ID.me transmits a TEFCA-approved token to the QHIN (Qualified Health Information Network, Interoperability Platform with Authorized Access to Patient Data). QHIN recognizes patient identity and consent to request and transfer health records back to OtisHealth, ensuring a smooth and reliable experience for consumers.

“History was made with OtisHealth’s success in processing the first direct patient request for their [personal health] records in the newly established national TEFCA network,” they said Mark Mar-Johanna, CEO of OtisHealth. “This milestone is a big step in making healthcare more accessible and safer for everyone.”

ID.me has been a member of the CARIN Alliance since 2018. The CARIN Alliance is a multi-sector, public-private partnership that focuses on giving consumers greater digital access to their health data. “The foundation of this consumer-facing exchange was digital authentication, which the CARIN Alliance has been promoting since 2017,” said Ryan Howells, head of Alliance KARIN. “The reality is that patients can now use one ID-authenticated digital certificate across a national network to access their health information. Our common dream has become a reality!”

This historic achievement underscores the commitment of OtisHealth, ID.me, CARIN Alliance and their digital health partners to pioneering advances in healthcare interoperability, ushering in a new era of patient-driven data access and control. “Healthcare interoperability is not possible without verified digital identity and authorized consent, two core principles of ID.me. With over 50M American adults who have verified their identity with ID.me to federal and state agencies, we are truly honored to simplify and ensure access to health data for all,” said Blake Hallfounder and CEO of ID.me.
